Introduction

This is a Visual Studio 2003 Project. This is a TreeView Explorer with MDI, Copy, Cut, Paste, Drag and Drop Functionality.

The sample creates, edits, deletes and saves trees in an MS Access database.

To run the project, the database file must be in the same path of the executable. I developed it first on VB, but then I decided to change it into C#. It is a very good sample for all developers who wish to explore the functionality of the TreeView and TreeNode controls...

Format of the DB

I know this is an old article and I just stumbled upon it. But what is the format of the Access DB? I tried creating and access DB with the following values, but since I am not familiar with the syntax I will give it my best shot.

Table Name: Nodes
Fields: NodeID, RootID, ParentID, Serial = {Number Field}
Fields: Name, Description, R, G, B: {Text Field}

If this is the format of the DB, somehow I cannot get it to work in VS2008 when trying to save the layout of the tree.

Can someone help me out here. I wish there was a sample DB posted with the article.

Found this accidently. Kewl... just that "iSerial" can have duplicates values which puts the structure off while re-loading the tree. Beautiful work!

I've a problem when i do saving of a tree in database. After saving, i reload it, and the structure isn't the same. I think, it's become from the nodebuider.savenode ! The transfer of data in recursivity don't work. I don't know why! can you help me ? jmh

Replace vSql="SELECT [NodeID] FROM [Nodes] WHERE [Serial]='" + iSerial + "'"; With vSql="SELECT max([NodeID]) FROM [Nodes]"; should resolve the bug. ShaLongBus

This is a very helpful example. I have learned many things about TreeView. Thanks a lot . PS: 'Paste' with context menu probably does not work correctly, with Ctrl-V work very well.

The DragDrop event for a TreeView doesn't fire if the sourceDrag and targetDrag are the same, that is I can't drag a node over another node in the same TreeView. Is there any explanation for this behavior ? Ernest

In the method Tree_DragDrop in the TreeForm.cs file, you'll find a piece of code like this...

if((e.KeyState) != CTRL_KEY)
  if(vSourceTree == vTargetTree)
   if(vTargetNode.FullPath.IndexOf(vSourceNode.Text)!=-1)
    return;

that's the reason why you "can't" drag an element over the same tree. If you press the ctrl key, you can drag the element, but you'll do a copy of the node.
