Introduction

Making games is hard! You need to learn programming, you need to learn 3d modelling, you need to learn design, you need to set up multiplayer servers, you need to re-learn platform specific APIs. The barrier for entry into unleashing your creativity is high. We want to make making games easy. Super-easy. So we're working on making a game to make a game. It'll be platform agnostic and allow for the collaborative creation of 3d multiplayer games using drag and drop mechanics. You will be able to drag and drop in your own levels, your own user interfaces. Build on top of game templates or create your own, and instantly play them with your friends on the big screen or across other Windows 8 devices, Windows Phone devices, iOS, Android, Tizen, Blackberry with the press of a button.

Application development

We've been working at the intersection between HTML5 and native technologies and have recently open-sourced the underlying real-time multi-platform technology. With our open source Multi engine you can in real-time visually edit levels, code, UI, and assets, and in a matter of seconds see your changes propagate to connected devices.

The engine works by using the highly dynamic nature of JavaScript where the main application logic lives and can be re-interpreted on the fly. We then build on top of HTML5 APIs to provide native support for performance sensitive and incompatible APIs for native C++ and mobile specific platforms. i.e. convert WebGL commands to OpenGL/Direct3D and IndexedDB calls to File system calls to access the SDCard.

For more information on the technology see our webpage: http://multiplay.io

Using the app

The game maker will be fully designed towards touch screen drag and drop mechanics.

On launch you will be presented to either play games made by other gamers or make your own game by building on top of other game templates (i.e. side scroller/fighting/shooting).

Once selected you will then be able to build your own user interfaces drawing buttons and assigning images for the buttons, and target event calls.

You will also be able to use a similar interface to edit game levels, where instead of drawing buttons, you'll drag and drop in 3d models and animations from our asset library. You will also be able to upload your own 3d models and animations to fully customize the experience.

A character editor will allow you create character actions and assign animations for each action. i.e. walk will play a selected walking animation.

While the games will be based initially off game templates, the templates are written in JavaScript and can be fully extendable. We will work on a visual node based JS code editor to make the programming more friendly to newcomers, however this feature may require more time to get right.

You can then start playing the game you made instantly and share your games directly with your friends on other web and mobile platforms using the click of a button and play them collaboratively.

After publication you will be able to continue to tweak all aspects of the game even during gameplay, by either going back into the editor or launching the editor in split screen mode. With your updates even being synced across your friend's connected mobile devices.

The kind of games you'll be able to make and play will initially range from 3d overhead shooters, to multiplayer 3d fighting games and side-scrolling platform games. However we are working to build more game templates such as car racing, FPS and RTS which we'll also include if time permits.

Platform and Category

Ideally the bigger the screen real-estate provided, the bigger the canvas for the user to create and play games will be, so we're primarily targeting for the all-in-one in the games category

As a bonus however, we're developing this application to scale between a tablet and big-screen experience.
