GeneralI have a QuestiongroupGrasshopper.iics4 Nov '12 - 23:50
Forgive me if my question looks silly to anybody. Forget about developing;I have never played a game in my mobile or Nexus or PC.

I have started learning about games just to satisfy my curiosity. So I wanted to know:
1) Is it mandatory to have some code of your game in C or C++? Is there any limit on what percentage of code should be in C/C++?

2) Is any game engine allowed? If so, what engines are allowed?

3) Is the contest still open? http://s.codeproject.com/script/Forums/Images/smiley_redface.gif

Hi Grasshopper.iics,

Thanks very much for your inquiry. Unfortunately the contest has now ended Frown | :(

Interestingly, we don't really have a Games programming forum on CodeProject, but we DO have a number of articles by authors who do just that:

http://www.codeproject.com/search.aspx?q=game&sort=createddesc&doctypeid=1&aidlst=78[^]

I'm sure some of the more recent articles would have an author willing to give some pointers.
Thanks,

QuestionArticle or Tip EligibilitymemberTG1e24 Oct '12 - 15:16
On the submission page there is an option to submit either an Article or a 'Tip or Trick'.

Is a 'Tip or Trick' submission eligible for the grand prize as well? For e.g. A tip explaining the use of the stencil buffer in OpenGLES 2.0 in the x86 Android NDK? Or does it have to be a game?

Can it be a collection of techniques, codes (with explanations) that have been practically used in smartphone game development?
AnswerRe: Article or Tip EligibilityadminChris Maunder25 Oct '12 - 13:22
The contest asks for a game to be submitted, not just a tip.

We, personally, would love you to submit your tips, but unfortunately it won't qualify for this competitions.
cheers,

Thank you for this information. I think I will focus on getting the game submitted and then submit the tips that I have gathered. I feel those tips are necessary to properly utilize the gaming framework that I'm leveraging.

One more thing,
To be in reckoning for the monthly $1000 prize, do I need to submit my game by 31 Oct 2012?

Or will the submission still be valid for the monthly draw if I submit by the last date, 6 Nov 2012? I think that I really could use that extra time.

Do let me know.

Oct 31 would be best.

Great, I will focus on 31 Oct submission first.

Can I submit one more entry by 6 November to be in reckoning for grand prize? Or is 31 Oct the final date for this as well?
GeneralUnity Android Game (which uses the NDK)memberyosofun2 Sep '12 - 16:17
Would a Unity Android game be allowed in the contest?
GeneralRe: Unity Android Game (which uses the NDK)staffJamie Galindo6 Sep '12 - 3:22
Hi Yosofun,

It is our understanding that unity android doesn't support x86.
Are you able to get unity working on x86 android? Is it a beta release or a developer build with support for x86?

Please confirm and I will let you know if a unity android game will be accepted.
As long as it can run in the emulator, it should be fine.

Let me know Smile | :)

Best,

Is it possible to test a Unity Android game from the market? Does intel android not able to take Android app store games
GeneralRe: Unity Android Game (which uses the NDK)staffJamie Galindo10 Sep '12 - 10:36
Hi yosofun,

It looks like it isn't possible to test a Unity Android game from the market since the emulator doesn't support it.

Android for Intel Architecture is able to work with most of the Android app store content.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,
The Code Project Team

After checking out the template and some discussions here, here are more questions:

* Assume there is no limit on how many words we should put into the article?

* For those entries not in the winner's list, their articles and source codes won't be published, right? And probably removed from your archives as well?

Thanks!
GeneralRe: questionsstaffJamie Galindo31 Aug '12 - 5:59
Hi there,

1. There is a word limit to an article, but you are unlikely to hit it. Worst case, we make it a 2 part article.

2. All articles are published and will remain on the site.

If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.

Best of luck!

Hm, if people win, they are probably OK with codes being published since they are already rewarded. However, for those who do not win, I think people would prefer keeping codes to themselves.
GeneralRe: questionsstaffSean Ewington5 Sep '12 - 7:54
Hi Member 9385721,

CodeProject articles are all about helping other developers learn - that's deeply important to us.

We certainly appreciate your concerns, but our hope is that the chance at a $25,000 grand prize might assuage them.
Thanks,
Sean Ewington

More about sharing, than about winning!

Good luck!

GeneralAny Language LimititationsmemberYusuf Uzun15 Aug '12 - 3:01
Can we use tools which they can convert codes between languages such as mono for android or can we mix different libraries in our project (such as ndk, gtk).
Thank you...
GeneralRe: Any Language LimititationsadminChris Maunder19 Aug '12 - 7:38
As long as it runs on Android and uses NDK you're good to go. Anything else that's added is up to you.
cheers,

GeneralCreator Rightsmembertcfunk10 Aug '12 - 5:13
Hello I am interested in entering the contest but I have some concerns about submitting full source code.

I know you go over it in the Terms and Conditions but I am not very good at parsing legal jargon.

Will you be distributing our source or compiled app in any way, or is it strictly for code review?

Thanks, and thanks for running such an awesome competition!
GeneralRe: Creator RightsadminChris Maunder19 Aug '12 - 7:37
The competition works like all other competitions in that the goal is to, ultimately, allow other developers to learn from your code and article in order to allow them to get started in writing games.

Your article and code will be published on CodeProject.com like any other article.

I understand there may be certain proprietary pieces of code you don't wish to share, but we're assuming that a $25,000 grand prize will more than make up for any inconvenience you may face in writing code that doesn't use proprietary information you don't wish to share.
cheers,
Chris Maunder

GeneralWhat about game assets?memberJH6431 Jul '12 - 8:37
What about arts and sounds? Not that I'm planning a complex game but It will probably include some assets not authored by me, at least some pixel art and a background music. Some questions:

1- ¿Can the game include any loadable asset at all or all must be done by code?
2- ¿Must the assets be created by myself?
3- ¿Can use downloaded Creative Commons assets (pixel art, sounds) not authored by me?
GeneralRe: What about game assets?staffJamie Galindo2 Aug '12 - 11:01
Hi there,

Please find the answers below:

1. We are okay with loadable assets
2. No, provided the below is met.
3. Yes, provided all of the assets either come from works supported by the Creative Commons license, or uses a license that does not conflict with any existing licenses that CodeProject supports, or has permission of the author of those assets provided those assets are not protected by licenses or terms not covered by CodeProject supported license or the attached Conditions of Entry.

I hope this is helpful.

Best of luck on your app submission!

Hi Manoel,

You can submit more than one app if you like, but keep in mind that quality is part of the judging criteria.

We look forward to your submission(s) Smile | :)
