Do you prefer silence or some music when you are coding? I glue my earphones to my ears while nickelback & linkin park mp3's are playing in repeat mode. The master of the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which; he simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.

Well i like to categorize my work in 2 modes:
1. When I know what need to be done and the task is just coding, coding and coding.
2. There is something new to learn. I get to know new stuff and perhaps do a lot of reading, understanding and implementation.
for the case 1: definitely the music is required.
for case 2: nope, as music will distract me. i might get the work done with music but I will not be able to extract the proper learning out of it.

Perfect, take my 5.
It is like driving in a known locality or driving in a unknown new place.
While driving in a known locality the hands will automatically guide the vehicle to destination, while in the unknown place, we need to concentrate without distraction

Love this category too. here i listen music too but the question was about music+code and not about music+procrastination so i didn't mention this category.
Disclaimer: I am no way trying to say procrastination is good, for those who don't, please don't start.
Disclaimer on disclaimer: I am also not saying it is bad. for those who do - no offense

Antidote to procrastination (most of the times) is Delegation of the task—it may not be unpleasant to someone else! and you can enjoy your music

yes, that is why I asked when you are coding.. ok may be I should be precise. Certainly, when learning a new thing we(well most of us) need 100% concentration. Instead of hearing thru earphone,if we hear through the speaker with low volume it really creates a jolly mood. Which would be so refreshing for our work
