New Delhi, May 21 2013 - Research has shown that even minor delays to website response times can have a sizable impact on customer satisfaction, page views, conversion rates and site abandonment[1]. Despite this, an astonishing percentage of organizations (32%) do not or don’t know if their website is monitored on a 24x7 basis. That’s according to an independent global research study undertaken by Vanson Bourne and commissioned by Borland, a Micro Focus company (LSE: MCRO.L).
Proving that many organizations still haven’t got the basics covered since the birth of first generation websites in the mid 1990s, a shocking 26% of CIOs from 590 organizations across the globe admitted they are not or don’t know if they are monitoring response times for mission-critical transactions. These include transactions such as shopping cart and database record retrieval on their websites. Financial services, retail and media, leisure and entertainment companies all confess to poor figures given they would typically have large scale e-commerce transactions, with 23%, 24% and 25% respectively.
80% risk customer experience and satisfaction
When it comes to trouble-shooting:
• 72% of respondents confirmed they are not always alerted at the first sign of a problem on their web services
• 80% are not always able to resolve a problem on their web services before a customer becomes aware of it. From a sector perspective, media, leisure and entertainment companies and financial services organizations are the worst culprits, with 90% and 87% respectively
The situation is even worse for web apps on mobile
• 34% of CIOs are not tracking how quickly their own website loads on mobile devices and 36% are not tracking how quickly their web application loads on mobile devices
• That’s despite the research respondents confirming they would only wait an average of seven seconds before abandoning a website due to lack of responsiveness
Testing and preparing for heavy traffic peaks is poor
Although 79% of CIOs are conscious of the events that drive peak traffic volumes, such as seasonal events or holiday periods, 44% do not simulate website performance with heavy load testing to see if they can handle the increased pressure on their websites. This is compounded by a communication breakdown between marketing and IT departments:
• 69% of CIOs are not made aware of their marketing department plans well ahead of schedule, which means they can’t plan for and test to ensure optimum website performance
• 73% of respondents are not always made aware of specific launches before they happen
Archie Roboostoff, Borland Solutions Portfolio Director, at Micro Focus, said: “Users have very little truck with poor performing websites today so these insights are pretty astonishing. 88% of online visitors are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience[i] so taking a passive approach to website performance is a massive risk to reputation, and for e-commerce sites, revenue too. It just goes to show that a solid performing website is still a competitive advantage, and that any company delivering an equally good web experience on mobile is likely to win the customer retention and acquisition battle.”
Nitin Dang, Country General Manager, Micro Focus, India and SAARC, said: “With the patience level of consumers declining with each step forward in technology, it is now becoming vital for businesses to ensure they test their websites on multiple platforms. With the trend demanding online presence, putting in the groundwork for robust performance is crucial to offer a rich and seamless experience the customers and in turn take full advantage of peak shopping periods through the year. The Silk product set are an easy to use, full functional set of interfaces (clients), which enables you to perform automated functional testing in a variety of development environments and programming languages. They are an efficient, cost-effective way to ensure your mission-critical applications meet performance expectations and service-level requirements.”
###
Notes to Editors
The independent research survey was undertaken by Vanson Bourne in February 2013. It covered 590 IT decision makers in nine countries including UK (100), France (100), Germany (100), USA (100), Brazil (100), Australia (35), New Zealand (15), Hong Kong (15) and Singapore (25). The respondents were from mainframe organizations with 501+ employees, covering multiple industry sectors.
Of the respondents, 56% have both a ‘main’ and a ‘mobile’ version of their website, while 43% have a single site serving both mobile and traditional browsers.

Jelastic, Inc., today announced the launch of a new version of its ultra-scalable cloud hosting platform. The new version, Jelastic 1.9.1, features a CRON scheduler, the ability to schedule database backups, and the latest versions of software stacks (including PostgreSQL 9.2.4).
Jelastic offers a fundamentally new approach to Java and PHP hosting: no need to learn custom systems or recode applications in order to deploy. Jelastic is the first cloud platform that can run and scale any Java or PHP application without any code changes.
The newly launched Jelastic 1.9.1 has a number of new features and improvements.
- Regulating the sequence of balance charging
- Config manager improvement
- PostgreSQL 9.2.4 support
- CRON Scheduler
- Scheduling backups for end user DBs
- Cutting database tables
- Notification about running out of resources (Mem, Disk, CPU)
- NetBeans IDE Plugin
- Generating direct URL for solution deploy
- Software Stacks Versions
Users of Jelastic 1.9.1 get access for each node configuration files and can choose to configure all the servers together or just a specific one.
Dmitry Sotnikov, Jelastic COO said, "Jelastic 1.9.1 features CRON scheduler, which allows users to schedule jobs to run periodically at certain times or dates. They can also run programs at a specified time with a help of scheduler, which receives instructions and performs any tasks following derived scenarios. Users can also backup databases or specific tables right from the configuration files. Jelastic assures that all data is being saved periodically and can be restored or reused."
Another new feature of Jelastic 1.9.1 is a notification about running out of resources. When the traffic grows an application requests more resources for normal work. If the limits selected are too low, this can lead to the failure in the app performance. For such cases the notification about running out of resources is implemented.
Now even more software stacks are supported including PostgreSQL 9.2.4 which provides:
- synchronous and cascading replication
- unlogged tables, per-column
- collations, and much more
The PosGIS module has also been enabled. It is a spatial database extender for PostgreSQL object-relational database. It adds support for geographic objects allowing location queries to be run in SQL.
Jelastic 1.9.1 is already available through a selection of web hosting providers world-wide. To see the list of partners, please visit http://jelastic.com/partners or sign up now for free at http://jelastic.com.

Neimat’s pioneering roles at Oracle and TimesTen with in-memory relational databases will help Aerospike drive the next generation of hybrid in-memory and flash databases
Mountain View, CA – May 20, 2013 – The big data discussion is shifting to “fast data” as more companies seek to harness the unprecedented volumes of information being generated at high velocity via Web, social and mobile interactions and sensors. These businesses are rolling out new applications that respond immediately to what people, devices and systems are doing now. In turn, this is driving the demand for a new class of highly distributed in-memory databases that also are optimized for fast, stable flash-based storage.
In the wake of this fast data wave, Aerospike, Inc. (http://Aerospike.com) has attracted in-memory database pioneer Marie-Anne Neimat to join the real-time database company as an advisor. Ms. Neimat co-founded TimesTen, Inc. the first company to develop and commercialize an in-memory relational database. Most recently, she served as vice president of engineering for three of Oracle’s databases, including TimesTen, which Oracle acquired. Bringing a track record of database innovation and deep insight into CIOs’ demands, she will play a strategic role in helping Aerospike to build on its technology leadership and rapid market adoption.
The Future of Fast Data in Production Today
Already, customers (http://www.aerospike.com/why-aerospike/customers/) have the enterprise-grade Aerospike real-time hybrid DRAM and flash memory database (http://www.aerospike.com/performance/architecture/) in production supporting fast data applications within some of the world’s most data-intensive environments. These companies’ real-time big data platforms rely on Aerospike to consistently respond within milliseconds, even while scaling to hundreds of thousands of transactions per second (TPS) and managing billions of objects and terabytes of data—all with 100% uptime.
“The ubiquity of smart devices is heralding a new era of fast data where the value of applications lies in the ability to sense and respond to Internet-scale data in real time. However, it is also challenging databases to cost-effectively and reliably deliver speed at scale,” Ms. Neimat observed. “Aerospike is at the forefront of the database revolution in addressing this challenge with a unique hybrid memory approach and scale-up/scale-out architecture that is deployed at dozens of Internet-scale sites today. I’m excited to join the Aerospike team in building on this tremendous momentum.”
Joining Forces With In-Memory Database Innovator
Marie-Anne Neimat was at Oracle Corporation where she most recently served as vice president of development for three database products: Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, Oracle Berkeley Database, and Oracle NoSQL Database. Prior to joining Oracle, Ms. Neimat was co-founder of TimesTen, Inc. the first company to develop and commercialize an in-memory relational database. There, she served as vice president of engineering and board member, and in 2004 she was recognized on the Fast Company Fast 50 list of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. TimesTen, Inc. was acquired by Oracle in 2005. Prior to founding her own company, Ms. Neimat worked at HP Labs where she managed several database research projects. Ms. Neimat holds a BSC in mathematics from Stanford University and a PhD in computer science from UC Berkeley. She holds several patents and is the author of many publications in refereed conferences and journals.
“It is a deep honor to have Marie-Anne join us as an advisor. With her roles in leading in-memory database design at Oracle and TimesTen, she brings valuable insights into the data demands facing CTOs today, and a track record of success in growing database adoption,” said Bruce Fram, Aerospike CEO. “With Marie-Anne joining Don Haderle, father of IBM DB2, and Roger Sippl, Informix founder and Silicon Valley pioneer, we have an incredible advisory board with an unmatched breadth and depth of experience. These advisors, along with the technology rock stars driving our database development, are solidly positioning us to lead the fast data revolution being fueled by the Internet economy.”
About Aerospike
Aerospike, Inc. offers the only real-time Internet-scale database that delivers predictable high performance for mission-critical applications. Aerospike’s hybrid memory (DRAM and native flash) architecture scales up and out, consistently processing over 500k transactions per second per node with sub-millisecond latency. Tel-Aviv, May 16, 2013 – Typemock, (http://www.typemock.com/) the leading provider and pioneer of automated unit testing solutions held a corporate event to celebrate eight years since its founding. CEO Eli Lopian addressed the gathering and laid out his thoughts on the necessity of unit testing in software development: “Any software programmer that does not do unit testing is a reckless coder”, declared Lopian. “Unit testing is an essential part of any software development process. It allows you to deliver working code, with fewer bugs, faster. Typemock has made huge advances with its automated unit testing tools in the past eight years. The old arguments that unit testing is too hard no longer apply!”
Lopian noted that Agile Software Development has become widely accepted in recent years, but that some programmers still insist that unit testing is not an integral part of the Agile process. Lopian argues this point: “Without unit testing you may think you are Agile, you may be running fast but you are not healthy, you won’t be able to keep up to speed. Sooner or later, you, or even worse: your customers, will start finding bugs which will compel you to introduce changes to what is now legacy code - without any tests to show you what you’ve done wrong. In today’s hyper-competitive market, corporations cannot afford the resource and time drain of having to re-write their entire code every few years due to code decay.”
Lopian predicted that in the coming years all software will be developed with unit testing. He hopes the change will come from industry-made regulations similar to ISO, so that “software safety standards” will be in place. “As a developer myself, I have a dream”, Lopian ended, “that programmers will take the leap and become agile – really agile! This means not being afraid of legacy code, this means being proud of the software they've created, and this means building usable and sustainable code for millions of users. All this is within everyone's reach right now – with unit testing”.
About Eli Lopian
Eli founded Typemock in 2004 and serves as its CEO. A well-known figure in the agile and test driven development (TDD) arenas, Eli has over 17 years of R&D experience at large companies such as AMDOCS (NYSE:DOX) and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). In his previous roles, prior to founding Typemock, Eli was responsible for optimizing the development process and led the transformation of the development environment to support efficient processes and tools.
About Typemock

White paper from WSO2 examines how to optimize the storage, management and analysis of big data using open source tools that are established and well vetted
Palo Alto, CA – May 16, 2013 – Today, commercial organizations are storing, retrieving, analyzing and exploiting large and disparate data sets, which are often geographically dispersed and subject to extraordinary security measures. As a result, the global IT industry has evolved powerful tools to optimize the storage, management and analysis of big data. For many valid reasons, military and civilian intelligence communities (IC) in the United States have been slow to exploit these tools, despite collecting orders of magnitude more information than ever. A new white paper from WSO2 examines how IC executives, CIOs and acquisitions managers can apply lessons learned by commercial IT organizations in using open source big data solutions to maximize organizational capabilities, mitigate analyst workloads, achieve more accurate and rapid intelligence analysis, and foster widespread adoption—all while lowering total cost of ownership (TCO) over time.
The white paper, “Managing Big Data for the Intelligence Community,” explores the nature of the big data problem facing the intelligence community. The paper examines the existing tools the IC has developed to handle intelligence collection, data ingestion, transport, storage, analysis and exploitation. It then explores the leading big data challenges facing the intelligence community and why IC executives and CIOs are re-examining their roadmaps for existing tools. The paper concludes by offering architects and developers a cost-effective prototype solution architecture for managing big data, which enables a timely implementation and is based on modern, established open source data management and analytics tools that are established and widely adopted.
The paper can be downloaded at http://wso2.com/whitepapers/managing-big-data-for-the-intelligence-community.

The amount of memory required to render a document has been reduced by more than 20-30%. Rendering of images to PDF improved by approximately 25% when saving with JPEG compression. Technical webinars will explore how to take advantage of an ESB model to support enterprise integration, REST services, and SOA deployment using the WSO2 ESB
Palo Alto, CA – May 9, 2013 – An effective service-oriented architecture (SOA) deployment relies heavily on an enterprise service bus (ESB), which serves as the backbone for connecting disparate systems based on a range of open standards and proprietary technologies. A new three-part webinar series from WSO2 will examine best practices that IT organizations can adopt to optimize their SOA deployments using an ESB model. The sessions, which run May 16-June 4, will be led by WSO2 technical experts responsible for WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (http://wso2.com/products/enterprise-service-bus/) development, support and implementation services. The webinars include:
• Enterprise Integration with the WSO2 ESB – An Introduction to the Fundamentals: Thursday, May 16, 2013
• Enterprise Use Case Webinar – WSO2 ESB Integration with REST: Wednesday, May 29, 2013
• WSO2 Advantage Webinar – Why the WSO2 ESB Should be Part of Your SOA Infrastructure: Tuesday, June 4, 2013
Each session will run from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time. To learn more and register, visit http://wso2.com/landing/wso2-esb-webinar-series.
May 16: An Introduction to ESB Fundamentals
High volume and the complexity of business requirements lead many organizations to move away from typical monolithic systems and adapt heterogeneous systems adhering to SOA standards. ESB middleware enables interoperability among heterogeneous environments where systems may include any combination of open standards, custom-builds, third-party technologies, or legacy systems. This webinar will explore the features and functions of an ESB, including background, architecture, applicability and benefits. Additionally, the session will examine fundamental enterprise integration patterns and demonstrate how to support them using WSO2 ESB.
Jointly presenting the session will be two WSO2 software engineers on the WSO2 integration technologies team: Isuru Udana and Pamod Sylvester. To learn more, visit http://wso2.org/library/webinars/2013/05/enterprise-integration-wso2-esb-introduction-fundamentals.
May 29: WSO2 ESB Integration with REST
Today, developers can define representational state transfer (REST) APIs in an ESB without writing additional code. However, exposing enterprise applications as RESTful APIs and managing them can present new challenges. This webinar will examine REST APIs, services and architecture; demonstrate a RESTful integration using WSO2 ESB; and examine how to design URL patterns for REST API support in the ESB. It also will examine the relationship between REST and SOAP, as well as introduce API management and OAuth security. Key questions the webinar will seek to address are:
• What is the proper mechanism to secure a REST service?
• How can thousands of APIs be managed effectively?
• Is it possible to address the data consumption needs of today?
• How can existing Web services be integrated following a RESTful style?
Joint presenters Dushan Abeyruwan, WSO2 senior software engineer, and Ravi Unduptiya, WSO2 software engineer, are members of the WSO2 integration technologies team. To learn more, visit http://wso2.org/library/webinars/2013/05/enterprise-use-case-webinar-wso2-esb-integration-rest.
June 4: Role of WSO2 ESB in an SOA Infrastructure
Facilitating interoperability among many heterogeneous software components in an SOA creates the potential for high scalability, high performance and high throughput. At the heart of many of these SOA implementation is an ESB. This webinar will examine architectural advantages of WSO2 ESB. It will review how the mediation engine has gained the ability to handle billions of transactions per day. Additionally, the session will explore how the event-driven asynchronous behavior of the design enables WSO2 ESB to process large loads of messages with very low latency. Other session topics will include:
• Mediation engine architecture
• New pass-through transport for ultra fast mediation
• The flexibility of the WSO2 ESB componentized architecture
• How WSO2 ESB can be deployed and used in the cloud
Leading the session will be two members of the WSO2 integration team who focus on WSO2 ESB: Ishan Jayawardena and Jeewantha Dharmaparakrama. To learn more, visit http://wso2.org/library/webinars/2013/06/wso2-advantage-webinar-wso2-esb-should-be-part-your-soa-infrastructure.

White paper examines technical and business advantages of fully integrated, componentized WSO2 Carbon middleware platform based on Eclipse implementation of OSGi
Palo Alto, CA – May 8, 2013 – Too often, when IT organizations implement a vendor’s “suite” of middleware products, they discover the suite isn’t nearly as integrated as one might expect. As a result, enterprise architects and developers devote significant time on internal platform integration—increasing not only their cost of IT and risk of disrupting the business, but often stifling their ability to adopt new innovations and use IT agility as a competitive business differentiator. A new white paper from WSO2 examines how the company’s revolutionary componentized middleware architecture eliminates these integration roadblocks and enables more agile enterprise application development and deployment. The paper, “WSO2 Carbon: The Composable Platform,” can be downloaded at http://wso2.com/whitepapers/wso2-carbon-the-composable-platform-advantage.
IT Agility Through Platform Coherency
The white paper white paper introduces the core WSO2 Carbon architecture, as well as the WSO2 Carbon products built on this foundation, which comprise the WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform (http://wso2.com/products/carbon/). It also examines how WSO2 Carbon relies on the Eclipse Equinox open source implementation of OSGi, the Java component technology popularized by the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) as its fundamental componentization technology. The paper then examines 10 top technical advantages customers have cited as benefits of adopting WSO2 Carbon middleware. It concludes with the resulting business advantages, including simpler, speedier projects; reduced risk of failure; and the ability to significantly reduce the need for specialized experts and consultants.
Among some of the concepts the paper examines are:
• Platform coherency: functional components are shared across the entire platform, dispensing with overlapping functionality and eliminating complex intra-platform integration challenges.
• Consistent usability: concepts, administration consoles, and APIs are common between all components of the platform, allowing developer skills to be applied broadly and efficiently.
• Composability: architects and developers can easily add functional components as needed to a particular solution.
• Leanness: middleware capabilities can be tailored at the runtime level to ensure the solution contains all the required functionality without being complicated by unnecessary and unused capabilities.
