Contrary to stupid statements that are popular with teachers (who, let us remember, are "them as can't", so anything they teach obviously didn't work for them), one does not learn to write, whether it be literature or code, by reading literature or code.
You can learn a bit by editing literature and analysing code (same thing, different horses), after you've made at least a good start on studying the syntax of the language, but, as with any other calling that requires a high level of creativity, you need to have that spark built in -- you can't learn to be creative; you can only learn how to fake it.

Coding is hardly being creative; repeating patterns with a degree of predictability. And yes, reading other people's code is educative, I learned many a thing from projects that contained inputs from different developers over years of writing and modifying.

Sure, but you analyse it, not read it.
My gripe with the article is that it makes you go through about 3,000 words of waffle to get its only point ("analyse code that other people have written"), without ever using the word "analyse" -- the most important word for the topic.
Maybe he was afraid of sounding too technical (in an article for developers!), or maybe he just doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, so he just rambled, then added more. And more. And more. (The symptoms are quite recognisable.)

I can not understand why they don't get the point that if people want to use a tablet or phone that's what they will use and if they use a desktop or laptop PC it's because they DON'T want to use a laptop or phone. Those do not need to all look or be the same.
