I just used "what unholy abomination is this?" last week after getting a glimpse of the code for an app I was deploying. It was code converted from VB6 to VB.NET. No, I did not write this thing.
The app was crashing on startup on the pilot machines but worked fine on my test machines. Turned out the code it was executing on startup was doing some sigle-instance app stuff. It starting with getting the Desktop window handle, then walking the tree, looking for a specific window title in a massive, over-the-top way to implement a single-instance app.
Somehow, in the spaghettified, "world-record length of code" to accomplish this task, someone managed to write Convert.IsDBNull(...).
Duh fuq is that doing in there?

Somewhere around 2014 I found an /etc/passwd file in some dumps of the BSD 3 source tree, containing passwords of all the old timers such as Dennis Ritchie, Ken Thompson, Brian W. Kernighan, Steve Bourne and Bill Joy. Now everyone will log in as him (dang these 'hackers')
Much better (and memorable for a subset of humanity) than any horse battery staples (correct or not)

I am really surprised (and disappointed) that a man as knowing as Ken Thompson selected as a password a well known plain text term from one of his well known hobbies, without any sort of obfuscation.

This's been known for a while. .net standard 2.1 requires changes to IL and the VM; which would require a new side by side disk space eating framework install to support. MS, not unreasonably, wants to avoid that and isn't planning a .net framework update as a result.
Their decision to rebrand .net core vNext as .net 5 instead of .net core 3.1/4.0 (and push it as an upgrade target for .net framework code) is going to make this harder to address later on. When core was staying differently branded and presented as an independentish product it was reasonable to hope that the classic framework could get rollup updates every 3 to 5 years that did require a side by side install to limit the divergence and make newer versions of .net standard potentially useful for something beyond core/mono code sharing.
AT this point though, unless they change their minds on porting major legacy features (ex web forms) or those that they view as mistakes (ex app domains) to core, they're going to be leaving a substantial chunk of older major applications behind indefinitely. I'm fine with MS saying that doing so is a low staffing priority and the missing parts will slowly trickle in over the next few years. I'm also fine with them having their namespaces changed to Netframework.Legacy.DontUseThisForNewCode.* or to have them unavailable unless a setting is changed in the project/solution files to help warn off new devs from using them. I just want to avoid a repeat of the VB6 to VB.net debacle; especially since unlike where most vb6 desktop apps ended up being ported to C# desktop apps at least staying in the MS world; .net web apps that would need a major rewrite to continue to newer versions of the stack have a much higher chance of moving to non-MS tech entirely. At the same time I'd really like them to be open about plans for long term porting if they have any; spending a few years implying a rewrite is the only way forward only to announce a major feature is now ported is going to trigger a backlash from anyone who sunk a lot of time into porting out of the old tech only to have the need to do so removed shortly afterward.
