What is Amazon Web Services?

In 2002, Amazon opened its technologies and data to the developer community, enabling new, robust applications that drive online businesses. Since then, Amazon has released a variety of web services APIs that enable you to leverage Amazons data and robust infrastructure, easily and inexpensively.

Amazon's 10+ years and over $2 billion investment have resulted in a trusted infrastructure that can respond to the extreme demands of the Amazon.com retail web site. These fundamental services enable external developers and businesses to build solutions in a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective manner. In other words, Amazon Web Services enables Web-Scale Computing.

Some of our web services include:

  • Amazon Simple Storage Service

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is storage for the Internet. Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web.

  • Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Beta)

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use.

  • Amazon Mechanical Turk (Beta)

Amazon Mechanical Turk is an innovative web services that provides access to on-demand low-cost high-quality virtual workforce that integrates human intelligence into software applications.

  • Amazon Simple Queue Service

Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS) offers a reliable, highly scalable hosted queue for storing messages as they travel between computers. By using Amazon SQS, developers can simply move data between distributed application components performing different tasks, without losing messages or requiring each component to be always available.

What is Web-Scale Computing?

Web-Scale Computing is the ability to run your business at web-scale uninhibited by growth in numbers or geographic markets. On average, developers spend 70% of their time maintaining and worrying about infrastructure, and 30% of their time focused on the ideas that will propel a business forward. Web-Scale Computing is helping to invert the 70/30 ratio, so you can spend your energy creating the differentiation that will make your idea successful, while letting Amazon do the heavy lifting associated with building and managing infrastructure.
