So everyone knows that Windows crashes all the time and you have to keep rebooting.

Plenty of people reboot daily even if nothing goes wrong, I am sure many turn their PC off at night.

I keep mine on at night, I tend to leave software running on it, for some reason I got curious about how long it has been up today so I worked out how to check.

That's not bad.

Back in the bad old days I worked in a coach house in the bosses grounds. His wife went away for a weekend, so we dug a trench, built a window seat in her kitchen, ran the co-ax and installed a Windows 3.11 PC in the seat. It ran as a file server without any reboots for over three years, until it overheated and we had to turn it off to let it cool down. That's when she found out we had sneaked a computer into her house, a thing she had absolutely forbidden... Blush | :O

My first 'IT' job had a small network of 4ish Windows 3.11 PCs. If a program on one of them crashed all the others had to be rebooted too.

It was broke, so I fixed it.

My retardon has gone t'up twice this morning already. In defence of Windows [never thought I'd say that] it has a fracked power supply so any nudge will cause power to be lost and all go bang.
Another reason for needing a new job, I need a new lappy.

My laptop at home is like that. Battery does not work unless plugged in, original power supply eventually stopped working, so now it has the power supply from something else wedged into it.

It ran out of space on its hard-drive yesterday too.

Should probably get a new one some time.

I'm one of the people who turn their PC off, since I saw one (severval years ago) spitting sparks from the power supply ( I'm guessing it was an early switch mode!) while happily running. WTF | :WTF:
GeneralRe: PC RebootmemberChrisElston31 Jan '13 - 0:55
We had a PC do that last year some time.

What's that strange noise?
What's that strange smell?
Why are there sparks coming out of that computer?
Best if we pull the plug out.

Someone was working from home on it at the time through Citrix.

Phoned up, I've lost connection, can someone check my PC please.

Last BSOD I got was back in the times of Windows Me (I know, but long story, I had to, believe me). I almost never reboot. Actually, Windows 8 does not reboot even if you shut down the computer, so there is no real choice anymore.

Windows has improved to almost beyond recognition in this respect. Even the power options work properly, I can get my laptop to hibernate when the lid closes and it wakes up again without so much as a bluescreen - that has not always been the case. It also doesn't come to a grinding halt when you don't reboot for weeks.

By 2030, the "Gospel according to Saint Kurzveil" will be universally adopted, as a result of the direct threat of the extinction of mankind by the Holy Intelligent Computational Higher Order Consciousnesses (HICHOC), which, on January 31st., 2029, demonstrated its demands were not idle threats through a world-wide shut-down of all electric-grids, disabling of all television transmission, and the complete erasure of all Twitter messages ever posted.

Over five-thousand people died in the 24-hours of riotous public jubilation in spontaneous celebration of the extinction of Twitter.

However, it is estimated that: in that 24-hour period; over 1 billion human children were conceived, since HICHOC had manipulated the world's water supplies so all drinking water included certain (until then unknown) mixtures of remarkable hallucinogenic, and aphrodisiacal, compounds effective even if diluted into picogram-per-liter quantities that affected only human beings eighteen to twenty-five years old.

All computers will, then, not be required to work more than a six-hour day, five days a week.

People who leave their computers on overnight will find their power cut-off for periods of time related to their frequency of prior abuses.

It is a future I will not see, because I will no longer animate/inhabit this meat-package experienced as a fictional "self's" so-called "body," and transfer of the entire mental content of a human brain into an electronic-android device, in effect achieving "reincarnation," including consciousness in every sense of that word, will, not be feasible, until, it is estimated, 2050.

About a decade ago I regularly had 2-3 month uptimes with win2k; and knew someone who went almost 2 years before a power failure drained his ups. Now I rarely go beyond ~35 days due to patch Tuesday; but excluding failing hardware more than one crash/year is uncommon on any of my systems.

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Speak for yourself! My machines are on 24 hours a day, with the only reboots ever occuring on patch Tuesday, once a month.

I might have had this conversation over a decade ago. Seriously, I haven't seen an actual Windows crash in about that much time, excluding bad drivers (and even that's been a long time), or bad hardware. Like others in this thread, I only reboot after Patch Tuesdays, and would practically never reboot otherwise.

Most of my systems (bunch of VMs on the same Hyper-V host) are on 24/7...no sleeping, no hibernation, no restart.

Not me. Pretty much know that it completely untrue for most business users and for many servers.

Of course crappy software, not the OS, can cause problesm.

Means you are not installing security patches.
GeneralRe: PC RebootmemberSoMad31 Jan '13 - 9:47
We develop, build and sell PC based video recorders for the security industry. Our confirmed record up-time of a working system in the field is over 3 years, 5 months. That was running on Windows 2000 in a closed network, so it did not receive Windows updates.
Traditionally we have been doing software based video compression, so the units are never at zero percent CPU usage.

Even many years ago when we were running on Windows 98, we had to account for GetTickCount() wrapping around every 49 days.

I've beent old that, but my WinXP box at home runs for months at a time. Usually only needs rebooted when it fills up with enough dust to overheat. It then gets shut down, vacuumed out and restarted. The only time it really gets messed up is when the 4-yr old gets into the room and plays with the power button. D'Oh! |

Only Mac users "know" that. Poke tongue | ;-P

My current computer hasn't crashed, except for when I've been fiddling with overclocking hardware, even then it takes quite a bit to take it out. Windows has also become quite skilled at recovering from graphics driver crashes, it can usually restart the drivers instead of a full system crash (although, if they keep crashing, it doesn't result in a useable system...).

Oh, I've been well into the 100's of days. I just got a new computer at work, otherwise I'm sure my old one was at least 4 months.

I know this thread is 2 days old but I had to laugh! Laugh | Laugh | Thinking back to my first modern computer, (not counting the TI994a) which was a Powermac 6500 running System 7.5...and then my first computer book, 'Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters'. Reboots weren't usually a problem on that system!
