How to make a Geek Happy
Got the email from the boss today, and I quote:
Spec out an ideal development machine and give me the details… model/specs/cost…etc

How to make a geek happier:
Ok, you can Spec a custom build from NewEgg, I'll try and get it approved.

The Dell Precision T7500s are nice boxes. Dual 6-core Xeons with 12G RAM. I would however upgrade to a 256G SSD (boot disk) and a few SSD/7200rpm secondary drives. And if your boss could spring for one for me that would be very nice.

LOL, that was the one I sent first, spec'd it to 25k. Nice. And will never happen. Though to be honest, I probably could run some nice real-time simulations with it. This smart grid stuff is data heavy.

Dimes? I can't even get a computer that expensive using Apple's Mac configurator (though I did get it to $16.5K).

That's because macs that nice don't exist. And if they did they'd cost $75k.

A custom build from NewEgg now that would make anyone happy.

Got a request like that some two years ago, but with the caveat I got to include the rationale for every single part, or I may not get it approved. Managed to get an 8-core 12 GB machine with a NVidia Quadro 4000 and 1TB hard disk. And almost everything (except the graphics card) just based on recommendations right off the MS homepage! I might have added an additional SSD disk to the specs, but unfortunately MS didn't mention them anywhere
