"Software Engineer" and "Software Engineering" are very specialist terms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_engineer[^], http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_engineering[^] and have less to do with "art" than you might think. Certainly, when Knuth started his mammoth book project (and it was required reading on my Uni course, or at least the volumes he had written up to then were) Computer Programming was an art - and a black one at that - without many (or indeed any) of the principles we expect and encourage today. But Computer Programming was not Software Engineering.

There is, or should be, more design and engineering in software production these days than art. "Engineer" is not a stretch, or it shouldn't be by the time you even get to "junior" status.

Go for it. The only stigma is yours and when you think of it, there isn't any. Smile | :)

It's better than ending up as a Junior Software Engineer at 67.
GeneralRe: junior SEmvpOriginalGriff16 Mar '13 - 23:07
And a damn sight better than "unemployed layabout" at 27... Laugh |

Hi Matra,

Don't worry about your age; if this is something you feel a passion for, an opportunity you find compelling, or simply a financial opportunity you "can't refuse" right now, for whatever reason: go for it.

But, the "context" here is not very clear; if this job is a "step-down," compared to your previous work, that's a very different scenario.

I do assume that if you "get into it," and find it doesn't suit you, you do have the freedom to stop.

good luck ! Bill

Hi Bill, thanks for your reply.
I can't say that it's that much of step down, my job was more organizational (the last one).
The thing with programming here is that I like it, so I know at some point I need to
"step into" it somehow, so if they allow it through "junior engineers" so be it....(although I do have *quite* some experience with it, be it non commercial (mainly hobby, but with some commercial experience also).

Junior Software Engineer when one is 27

What difference could it possibly make? It's just a job title and does not really mean anything anyway.

I was 26 when I started my first position as a professional software engineer (writing games for Apple II computers in assembly language.)

I've known "senior" software engineers in their forties and fifties with decades of experience who weren't worth the desk space they used. (On the other hand, I worked with a guy in his early twenties who was one of the smartest engineers I've ever worked with, even if a little undisciplined.)

Anyone with a Galaxy S3 or otherwise using Android 4.1.2 Kernel 3.0.31-996085 or similar may want to check their diary. I just had an all day reminder for 15th March pop up at 10pm on 16th March, just a little late.
It's not likely to be a 'local' problem as I rebooted the device yesterday afternoon, it's clock is right, it's online and otherwise working. The appointment was entered through some calendar software called Jorte which I have previously found to be reliable. It could be that at fault but I understand most things like appointments use some kind of shared OS module on Android that Apps hook into so it's as likely that someone at Google screwed up as elsewhere, Jorte has not recently been updated, the firmware has.
And no I didn't miss the appointment. Smile | :)

Removing double-sided tape from a (paper) poster without damaging it...
The tape is pretty sticky and has been sticking for about five to ten years.
The internet is full of tips and tricks, like putting it in the freezer or warming it up.
Unfortunately the internet is also full of people saying those tips and tricks don't work.
I am pretty sure there are some handy people on this website who know what to do though.

So, any suggestions?
Thanks.
It's an OO world.
