1. The lounge is for the CodeProject community to discuss things of interest to the community, and as a place for the whole community to participate. It is, first and foremost, a respectful meeting and discussion area for those wishing to discuss the life of a Software developer.
The #1 rule is: Be respectful of others, of the site, and of the community as a whole.
2. Technical discussions are welcome, but if you need specific programming question answered please use Quick Answers[^], or to discussion your programming problem in depth use the programming forums[^]. We encourage technical discussion, but this is a general discussion forum, not a programming Q&A forum. Posts will be moved or deleted if they fit better elsewhere.
3. No sys-admin, networking, "how do I setup XYZ" questions. For those use the SysAdmin[^] or Hardware and Devices[^] forums.
4. No politics (including enviro-politics[^]), no sex, no religion. This is a community for software development. There are plenty of other sites that are far more appropriate for these discussions. Or if you must, use the Back Room[^] - but enter at your own risk.
5. Nothing Not Safe For Work, nothing you would not want your wife/husband, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mother or your kid sister seeing on your screen. For those discussions where you wish to be a little more frank, use the Soapbox[^]
6. Any personal attacks, any spam, any advertising, any trolling, or any abuse of the rules will result in your account being removed.
7. Not everyone's first language is English. Be understanding.
Please respect the community and respect each other. We are of many cultures so remember that. Don't assume others understand you are joking, don't belittle anyone for taking offense or being thin skinned.
We are a community for software developers. Leave the egos at the door.
cheers,

I just watched the final between Borussia .v. Bayern and Bayern won 2-1. I usually never bother watching soccer but bloody 'eck those Krauts know a thing or two about playing it. I was completely hooked on tonight's game. Even Herr Merkel was at Wembley (or is it Vembley?) to watch the game. When the cameras recorded the emotions of the crowed, there was some half-decent totty on show.
It was a very good game to watch. It won't convert me to soccer as I'm a rugger man myself but after this evening's game Germany has proved that world soccer is in very good hands.
Well done the Krauts.

I still don't understand why M$ took out DVD playback in Windows 8. So I am now downloading VLC media player to play a Mythbusters DVD I want to watch.
Dammit, M$.
Don't get me wrong, I like VLC, as it plays pretty much everything under the sun, and it can play regionalized DVDs without having to change the DVD drive's region settings! That is a handy thing to have.

On a Saturday and Sunday morning (seeing as the onshore office is 'closed'), we are required to produce the daily region report to send out to all the big hitters in the company around the world, This ranges from the Chairman/CEO, numerous VPs etc. at present the distribution list is in the region of 80+ people.
We use a spreadsheet to collate the relative numbers and compose the required narratives before copying into an email. There is lots that can go wrong and sometimes does. Especially when the numbers don't balance.
It doesn't matter how many times, I check, re-check, re-re-check, re-re-re-check etc. (think you know what I mean), I still absolutely brick myself that moment before the SEND button is clicked.
Then there is that period of anticipation from the moment it is sent to late on in the day, when you are just waiting for someone to notice a mistake. Fortunately it has only happened to me a couple of times over the last 18 months.
So, I have just sent the report.......

Ponta with multimodality in PerC[^]
It's day ten since we started with Ponta project. Things are as rough as we thought they would be. We have used OWI kit so far. It is closest to one used in practical robot and industries. I wanted to avoid Lego at all costs. Arduino gives me better flexibility than Lego. One more problem I faced with it is integrating two cameras. I want to fit a camera in the robot and other might be used for remote control. So I did a little work to get two camera's working simultaneously with the interface.
So at second week Ponta has started responding to voice, face ( head ) movement and hand gestures. The response so far is not really outstanding and lot of polishing and filtering is required at this stage to get a clean nice response from the robot. However seeing it responding to all modalities is still a great fun.
There is one thing though! Ponta is not yet detecting and recognizing objects. I want it to recognize spoons, tea pot and so on. I want it to identify and get the things of it's own rater than waiting for me to give command.
So I would work with object detection. I am not sure if the SDk provides object recognition! If it does not, then I will use simple k-nearest neighbor classifier rather than using something like SVM. KNN will save time. If detection is perfect, recognition shouldn't be any problem.
[Update: Object detection added]
Ponta with Object detection[^]
A night's coding was all needed to integrate basic object tacking. PerC does not come with an object tracking. So I have mapped the depth map image and RGB image, find out the distance between both sensors and aligned feed from rgb and depth sensors. Now, PerC does not give accurate World image coordinates. But the depth values changes with change in Z. Hence I put a simple technique of analyzing the pixel value of depth data and then filter values bellow 240, which return objects closer to camera. Now based on the bounding box of this depth data, I segment the RGB image. This segmented image is acting like the training image.
Next I use GPU based SURF detector to find the location of the object in the scene and threshold on returned Polyline area of remove small area which are result of misdetection. I can say, the overall detection is of about 60% accuracy.
I would now make some changes in the algorithm. Rather than checking each frame, I will first track 20 frames and the maximum area returned will be taken as basis point. From next frames it should search around basis point rather than whole image.
I would appreciate your critics and suggestions.

So, who all when sat at their desk while drinking tea/coffee or other beverage and typing on the keyboard, sits with the drink between their arms and works round the drink to reach the keyboard?
This is a more efficient placement of mug, as when you want to drink, your hand simply comes towards you and picks up mug on the way, rather than having to reach somewhere else for it. It also means that when you reach for the mouse, the mug doesn't get in the way.
It does carry some inherent risk, as if you get distracted and swing round on your chair, it is possible to side swipe the cup.
I do believe the benefits outweigh the risks.....I have found that my natural keyboard to edge of mug distance is approx 6".
Just my useless obeservation of the day!

Based on this, I'd say they aren't using their own tools (IE9 on the top, Chrome on the bottom). Look at the dog ear at the top right of each browser. Not exactly graceful degradation.

Ha! Have now joined the 200k + rep points club. Works out to about 1550 points per month since I joined though I did lurk for a while prior to that.
What I want to know is where is all the extra money I should be earning, the fame, the kudos, the MVP awards...
Oh, yeah, meaningless.
Anyway, thanks CP, been a fun and educational ride: all the kudos goes to the hamsters for keeping this place real.

1. Here I am trying to build a rather simple web page only to realize that ReportViewer control and ajax do not like each other. Hell, found some workarounds that mess up JavaScript so had to get rid of ajax controls.
2. Found quite good jQuery calendar widget but downloaded some other zip file and spent 20 minutes wondering why it is not working. (Not really your fault MS.)
3. Finally, managed to get everything sorted. But no, VS had other evil plans. Clicked on Design view and now for past 10 minutes it's trying to do some postback! That's just odd. Taskbar shows "javascript: __doPostback(treeViewName,someTreeViewNode)"

I came across this one in the Q & A:
how to do neural network training for devnagarik handwriting detection.
//What on earth is a 'devnagarik'? Bad start, but I don't know everything yet, maybe a new technology
plz help us this is for college project for final year.
//What? And you still sound like a first-term student with no idea of the subject?
thankyou xyzyaaay
//Great. take at least the time to spell 'Thank you' right
So this guy was really asking for helping his college final project. Nice.
His english was terrible, but mine is only slightly better.
What on earth is a 'devnagarik' ?
furthermore, it is his final project and he has no idea about the topic. Great man, you are not Nagy or MM or DD: You can't drink all day 'n' night long and learn a subject in the mean time.
And last but not least: Take the bit of time to spell thank you right.

Yep, I am pissed of and stressed. 5 hours left until weekend.

Well, that's right, Professor Frederickson, and that all matter is made up of not only density but of empty space, and if we can proportionally reduce the amount of empty space in any given object, we can, thereby, shrink the object.

Who's missing buttons and controls under big 7 and big 8 ? Not you ? Well, what if somebody decides to fix our problem by designing us a popup that will diagram, on a mouseover, the tab order of controls on any form or dialog, showing icons with interconnecting arrows unambiguously laying out for us what will happen when you press the Tab key (once, twice, ... ).
Too much work for too little pay ? I thought so.
