I love the idea of an elected Congress actually pushing out a tax code. That's so cute and old fashioned and so not post-democratic.
Here in EU land the writing of tax codes was long ago outsourced to the lawyers who work for big companies like Apple or Google. The largest corporations have been indirectly writing their own tax code for years and that why despite it's 10,000 pages of drivel they still pay only a fraction of the tax rates of smaller companies and individuals.
Now we have the unedifiying spectacle of the politicians who outsourced our authority in the first place complaining because they can't extract enough tax from Google to sponsor their own reelections.

I don't like Apple, but I have to agree that they are right in this case. Simplify the law and close loopholes or shut up. The lawmakers are at fault here!

Crucially, they are 'avoiding' not 'evading'. Nothing wrong with that: instead of whining to make political points from an easy target these corrupt old men should look at reforming the tax code and closing the very loopholes which I applaud Apple for exploiting - only wish I could do the same: sadly, for the vast majority of ordinary folk, we end up bearing the full brunt of the tax burden - I don't see Congress trying to do anything about that.

But of course Congress is doing something about that! They're telling you Apple is making you a victim by 'cheating the taxpayer'. That way they can imagine that we suffer from a vicarious greed that validates their petty persecutions because 'the people are right behind them'.
'The People' being their imaginary friend of course.

I'm sure they're like every other uber corp, they wouldn't pay there fair share no matter what is was.

In the UK at the moment we have a parliamentary review Google & Amazon not paying much tax, if like me you think there causing a fuss so the Tax Law can change with out too many people paying too much notice, the issue is always they create a law clever people sit there and work a way around it. One friend of mine said the best way of getting employed by one of the big accountancy firms was to work for Revenue & Customs for 5 years on a low(ish) salary and get 'head hunted' once you have seen the system from one side it makes no odds which side of the 'pond' you are on

Just last week, wifey's new company laptop arrived...a fully loaded HP Elite Ultrabook costing over $1800. She left for a business trip yesterday, stopping by a mall to do some quick shopping. Checking out, she realized that her keys were missing. She gets in touch with mall security and is relieved to find out that they have her keys. Upon arriving at the car, it wass obvious that someone had rummaged through it, and the new laptop was gone. Well, at least the thief was nice enough to leave the iPad. Also, they were nice enough to leave the keys hanging from the door, according to mall security. The laptop has a BIOS password and according to her company PC support team, they have a way to track it. Interestingly, one of the mall security guys asked her what her user name and password were, 'in case it turns up in a pawn show'. She was smart enough to not provide that information. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

There's someone below asking for sponsors for a Black Hawk helicopter. I'm thinking that the two of you could team up to retrieve the laptop.

Yes, I've heard of this. The ones I have seen are a module on the motherboard which is connected to the NIC. Either that or it's software based, which means it could be removed if someone formatted the hard drive.

Indeed, the invoice on the stolen laptop shows 'AMT Enabled Module 9470m'. I bet they simply brick it and buy another one vs. wasting resources trying to recover it.

Even if it is a chip built into the laptop and enabled via the password protected BIOS I wonder if it is even enabled.
Last job I had saw me at several customers with decent size fleets of laptops with Bitlocker running to encrypt data, but no BIOS passwords or tracking enable in the BIOS.

So she dropped her keys when she meant to put them in her purse. A nice security guard found them, clicked the button, decided to see if there was any identifying paperwork in the car, and well, wouldn't you know, the laptop fell right into his pocket.
I hope she didn't tell security that it has tracking capabilities. I have a feeling that's why the thief skipped over the Apple device, there's plenty of news stories of thieves being tracked by iDevices, but not often stories about other devices.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I wish she had given the mall cop fake credentials, but I don't know that I would have been that clear headed in that situation.

hmm not cool but great the laptop has a tracking solution on it.
I use Prey [^] on all my mobile devices - great free stuff.
I wonder if they left the ipad because people know how easy it is to track those?

I am looking for Sponsors for purchasing a military helicopter (probably Black Howk) some weaponry and hiring some freelance fighters and trackers. My idea is locating and taking over OG's Secret Volcano Base. According to a private data a facility is located in that base with Mad (but Genius) Scientists who are developing a powerful weapon for world domination.
