1. The lounge is for the CodeProject community to discuss things of interest to the community, and as a place for the whole community to participate. It is, first and foremost, a respectful meeting and discussion area for those wishing to discuss the life of a Software developer.
The #1 rule is: Be respectful of others, of the site, and of the community as a whole.
2. Technical discussions are welcome, but if you need specific programming question answered please use Quick Answers[^], or to discussion your programming problem in depth use the programming forums[^]. We encourage technical discussion, but this is a general discussion forum, not a programming Q&A forum. Posts will be moved or deleted if they fit better elsewhere.
3. No sys-admin, networking, "how do I setup XYZ" questions. For those use the SysAdmin[^] or Hardware and Devices[^] forums.
4. No politics (including enviro-politics[^]), no sex, no religion. This is a community for software development. There are plenty of other sites that are far more appropriate for these discussions. Or if you must, use the Back Room[^] - but enter at your own risk.
5. Nothing Not Safe For Work, nothing you would not want your wife/husband, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your mother or your kid sister seeing on your screen. For those discussions where you wish to be a little more frank, use the Soapbox[^]
6. Any personal attacks, any spam, any advertising, any trolling, or any abuse of the rules will result in your account being removed.
7. Not everyone's first language is English. Be understanding.
Please respect the community and respect each other. We are of many cultures so remember that. Don't assume others understand you are joking, don't belittle anyone for taking offense or being thin skinned.
We are a community for software developers. Leave the egos at the door.
cheers,

I just got my first iPad today.
I code in Microsoft Visual Studio, use Microsoft SQL Server, own a Microsoft Windows Phone, have Microsoft Windows Server on my server, and run Microsoft Windows on my PC's and laptops.
So getting an iPad is a whole new experience for me.
I want to write apps. I'm a C# guy. What are the tools I need to write apps for my shiny new iPad?
Thanks

Finally got to go see Star Trek last night. Really enjoyed it though it did seem like it was just a filler episode with too many 'clever' references to the original films/episodes. Methinks the scriptwriters were a touch lazy. Still, jolly good fun and Cumberbatch, whilst totally miscast as Khan, did play the part well with Simon Pegg getting some good screen time.
Actually, Mickey[^] would have been far better and more believable as Khan.
Just my tuppence worth.

I've been sat on a plane at Manchester airport for around 40 minutes now, watching Bodger and Badger go up and down in a little crane and fiddling away with the wing.
They've opened boxes, looked at sheets of paper, sent for a bigger hammer and a new roll of duct tape.
If this plane ever does get off the ground I don't fancy its chances of stopping there.

I've been trying with varying success for a couple of hours to download a 6GB installer. I never knew downloading such huge files was a massive pain in the arse!
First I was on Windows, Chrome occasionally would just keep pausing the downloads meaning I couldn't leave it running, FF got to about 4.1 GB and then gave up without even an error. Tried to download a download manager, but it was an infected installer.
Gave up looking for Windows based download managers and booted Linux, found one called "FlareGet" which downloads a file in segments supposedly decreasing time it takes to download files. Paused it for all of 10 seconds so I could let the buffering on a Youtube video I was watching catch up, un-paused the file downloading and it started all over again, even though it had just got to 48% before I paused it!

Cicada Invasion[^]
I have a massive loathing of insects, a phobia that came about as result of seeing an episode of Doctor Who back in 1972 entitled 'The Green Death'.
It was about pollution causing mutations in insect life resulting in giant maggots and huge dragonflies etc.
Nevermind the fact that the science was bollox (there is a maximum size for insects due to the manner in which they take in oxygen and they physical construction of their bodies), it was more to do with the fact that I was 5 and frightened shitless.
Still, the result is that for me to be stuck in a place where billions of large aggressive looking, (although utterly harmless) crickets appear at the same time, being crunched underfoot, flying into my face and generally causing me distress would be my idea of the 9th level of hell, I am glad I am staying well away!
Good luck to those of you about to suffer from it.

Not really. But Man of Tai Chi kind of seems like it, what with the focus on martial arts, starring Keanu Reeves, and being directed by Keanu Reeves. Sadly, however, the plot doesn't seem quite as interesting as The Matrix.

Hey friends which music you are listening now ?
|
|
|
|

|
why?
Here is the story :
Today for setting up ns-3,i installed Ubuntu(through wubi) on my dev box ( Win 7 ) and spent all day inside it.
Soon after logging, the problems, started to appear.
1 - I needed to install python
2 - I needed to install TCL.
3 - I needed to install g++ ( for compiling ns-3 )
4- JAVA? No problem! In Win7 also you need to install it.
5- Adobe flash? I just installed it but after opening some tabs, Firefox started to freeze and in a rare time in Linux history ( ) desktop vanished and after some HDD LED work, it logged out and showed me the login dialog!
6 - I needed a notepad++ Linux equivalent. No chance!
7- Process Explorer Equivalent? No chance! ( i found one but it wanted to download 61MB of software !!!! )
8 - Gtalk? Yahoo Messenger? Still no chance! OK. I used Empathy, but it did not authenticated me to my yahoo account!
9 - Foxit Reader? OK! The only tabbed applications in Linux are web browsers and Terminal window! So, no tabbed pdf viewer you can see there.
10 - I have another monitor attached to my laptop. I needed to assign the dashboard to my own preferred desktop. No Chance!
And the list goes on ....
You know, i think the whole philosophy behind current Linux development is wrong!
why?
Because it has been prepared from a developer's perspective not an ordinary user who just wants to set up his environment and start to work.
Maybe it works for some basic tasks like web surfing or word/image processing, but behind that, you are facing the terrible fact: you have to setup what ever you want by your hand and the most important is learning some scripting language ( python, bash, TCL, etc.).
Ubuntu has tried to fix this problem with its own 'Ubuntu Software Center' and it is an awesome effort, but there is still plenty of work to be done. The user should not search the web for dependencies or libraries needed for certain application to get work.
After all, i think the whole Linux culture should be changed because people out there, are not developer.

I've never watched it and you can't avoid it on the news but Britain must now get out of Europe's crime against humanity, namely, the Eurovison song contest. It was embarrassing to watch Britain's entrant, try to sing. To protect her I will not give her name and I will only refer to her as Tonnie Byler.
The bit I saw on the news suggested it might have been a bloke singing dressed up to look Bonnie Tyler, even though it wasn't actually him appearing.
There's been a lot of coverage lately of the in/out membership of the EU. If the politicking plonkers at Westminster want to gauge public reaction they should hold an immediate referendum on the UK remaining in the Eurovision as that'll give an indication of what people think about the EU?
The people and countries that organise the Eurovision are guilty of the most vile acts of sensory deprivation. Waterboarding using "music" must be outlawed.

Our local paper ran a main story about Crawley being officially a "crap" town. In 2004, when it looks like the last official survey was done, Luton finished top of the crap town list. This year, Crawley is likely to feature in the top 50 (I'd say it's appearance is mandatory, rather) and that has caused a bit of a kerfuffle as some Crawleyites are up in arms.
I think the report cited great improvements in the town's infrastructure and other changes that have made life to us who live here, much better. F'that for a game of conkers. I've seen naff all since we moved here in 2000. I don't know when the official list will be published but I suspect the old favourites of Crawley, Hull, Luton, Stevenage to name four will al be vying for the title.

Things to do, if I win...
1. Buy a trailer that hides a mansion bunker below it.
2. Hire some engineers to create a pair of poindexter google glasses with white tape in the middle.
3. Buy Jolie new breasts.
4. Buy a Munsters car.
5. Buy a big inflatable alien and put it on the CP lawn, looking into the building.
6. Buy a remote controlled shark for the beach, maybe with a laser beam mounted on its head.
7. Hire a fat jockey to ride on orb for triple crown.
8. Buy a nice aged scotch.
9. Give some money to everyone who doesn't ask or want to be my friend.
10. Give some to charity

We are gearing up for perceptual computing final challenge. This time, we are going Robotics. The project is named Ponta ( That's how my son calls the Robot). It is going to be a complicated robot which will primarily do follwoing
1. Move, Pick and Place objects
2. Follow you
3. Surveillance
4. Watering
5. Playing simple games
6. Greet people.
7. Informs about Temperature, Light Condition, Humidity etc
8. Dance to music tunes.
9. Play music for you
It will operate with Voice command, will recognize persons, can follow persons, work with gestures, hand movement and many other things. Will respond to your emotions.
The "Brain" or Artificial Intelligence is going to be built with Neuro Fuzzy system. It will combine Perceptual Computing SDK, OpenCV, Microsoft Speech SKD. Robot will be mounted over a rover with Ultrabook, Battery pack and sensors all loaded on board.
So it's relays, motors, gears and hell lot of coding. Thought would share with you. I am excited, I am nervous. Its huge but I hope to finish it in a month's coding.
Here is the first update on day three. The voice command with simple prototype.
