Have you ever come across a person that pauses for a moment too long when saying something in passing (imagine somebody saying "hi" then staring at you for 5 seconds)? It feels a bit like talking to a close-talker, only it's temporal rather than spatial.

For years I've been using various freeware apps for graphics (and just about everything else). And while the results were mostly good, on occasion something would go totally awry and reduce a graphics project to smoldering pixels (like the massive memory leak in Photo Pos Pro).

Yep, deffinitely have more energy. Went for a walk around Pont du Gard with the kids, dogs and friends the other day. I was fair leaping about like a spring lamb!
Wonder how long I can keep it up for before I succombe to an indulgence. Its the drink. As soon s I have a few I have to light up. It really is impossible to do otherwise (so I havent had a drink for a week and a bit either). (Yeah, OK, I had food poisioning for 3 of those days and didnt feel like much of anything, which is a good way to kick the habit I gvuess.)
Really want to stop though. At my age you can really feel the fags taking a toll. Some years ago I cut back to only smoking once a week when I went to the pub, but there arent any decent pubs near me now so I started smoking at home too. Bad move, soon becomes a daily habit.)

Does anybody really care.
Well I guess one site doesn't. I'm trying to book a flight and the I'm getting the following departure times.
Depart NaN:NaNpm – NaN:NaNpm
I guess knowing the actual departure time for a flight isn't as relevant as it used to be.

I discovered an interesting Chrome feature that I hadn't really noticed before. The zoom setting gets saved by domain name. I noticed this when adjusting the zoom on a site, then coming to CP where I always have my zoom set at 90%. The first page was at 100%, then when I opened a new tab with CP, the new tab was at 90%. This feature is awesome, as it prevents the need to constantly change your zoom settings, but it lead me to ask: Where does Chrome save these settings?
After a quick google search I came across this[^].

So here I am back in the office.
I am the first one in (lazy buggers are probably grabbing those last few seconds of freedom).
There is no milk for tea (remedied by nipping round the corner to the shop), and I have to make it myself (no elves have arrived to prepare the first cuppa of the year).
It is freezing because the scrooge-like proprietors have turned it off over the break.
The pile of post by the front door this morning is immense, there are mountain goats leaping from ledge to ledge and I will need a damn sherpa to get to the top of it. (Started opening it, but wish I could hand this tedious job over to someone else).
Now the bloody phones have started ringing and I am wondering how quickly I can get my finances sorted so that I can afford to retire.(Being only 45 it may take a few years).
I will be fine by next week, but the Curmudgeonly Old Git in me hates coming back to work after the XNY break.

So, I work on a website that was classic asp, and I've been converting it to MVC. I am finally working on the biggest pages, the ones I left to last. Along the way, I went from having a header that was repeated over and over across every page, to one central control. I get a report from testing, the page is not centred, in IE, on one page only ( our landing page ). I should mention, this site has about four different CSS files, all use the same class names, and now they all need to co-exist for the versions of this header to work. The use of CSS is arbitrary to say the least, it's a nightmare.
So after a few hours of fighting with the IE dev tools ( a pale shadow of Chrome ), and seeing that the CSS is ALWAYS the same on the elements in question, and that margin is indeed set to 'auto', I worked it out. That one page was not using a template ( long story, it would require a template that was specific to that one page ), and the html had an onload statement in the body tag. Replace that with a load event in jquery ( or just remove it ) and the page centres. How is it possible that an event in your body tag, causes the page to ignore CSS that is present, and shows as being applied, in the in browser dev tools ?

We're making a list and checking it twice to put together our annual list of CodeProject's Most Valuable Professionals. The announcement will be on the site this week and in the newsletter next Monday.
I'd normally say "good luck" but this isn't about luck - it's about hard work and all those who gain the MVP title have earned it.
I'm looking forward to congratulating the top members, but wish I could offer a thousand such awards.
cheers,

Herself is watching the BBC Breakfast, and they have some lady on, talking about her "achievements" this year.
Among which she includes:
"Removing a dead mouse from a vegetarian friend's mousetrap"
"Looking for a lost dog, and not finding it."
Is it just me, or are those a bit, well, b*ll*cks?
It's OK for vegetarians to kill things, but not to eat or touch them afterwards?
Not finding a missing dog is an achievement?

I have uploaded the source and binaries for my Windows 7 Rich Text Editor. The repository is here[^].
There is still a lot to be done, but the application runs. Any suggestions for other features?
What needs to be done:
* Finish the Options Dialog
* Use a differemt installer, as Inno Setup has some stupid points that have caused some issues.
* Finish creating the various dialogs
* Get logging completed.
* Finish the web browser and scripting addins
* Add more extensibility points
* Use a docking system instead of a tab control
* Refactoring
* Bug Fixes

We are so set on
"Out with the old, in with the new."
Yet, so many of us
still nar have a clue.
From thence we've learned
to yonder we daily do slave
On about 12 years old
unto the lonely, cold grave.
That each day as light
shines from the eastern sky
(and some of us code
24/7 'til the day we die!)
To tell a story
upon web page or desktop app
Testing, testing, testing,
[Time for a quick nap.]
May it always be said
our toil not be in vain,
To ship a solid product,
lest we need to compile again.

First off: HAPPY NEW YEAR!
With that out of the way: I am still working on my Windows 7 Rich Text Editor, and I think I will be able to release it in a couple of weeks, if VS will cooperate with me. Most of the functionality is in place, and I am working on the English translation for the application. When I get it online, I will need help translating it to other languages.
The AddIns I am going to create/have created are:
* Additonal Toolbar Themes (Office 2007/2010 and Vista) (Already functional)
* A Scripting Environment (IronPython with support for VB and C# using Roslyn)
* A Web Browser (WebKit (Chromium), Gecko (GeckoFX), and Trident (The built in web browser control), with the default being WebKit)
* A PDF Viewer
* An Automatic Updater (Eventually)
* Cloud Upload/Download (e.g. SkyDrive, DropBox, etc)
* File Compressor (using SevenZipSharp)
* FTP Upload/Download (Eventually)
Another idea I had is to make the main window use a docking system instead of a generic tab control. What is your input on that? And any other AddIn ideas? This is a Windows Forms application, but I will take ideas that use WPF as well.
I also think I will post an entry on the blog on my profile page soon as well.
Entry Posted[^].
All further discussion should take place there.

A Very Joyous New Year to You and Your Families !
I will be in 2013 in only 4 hours and 38 minutes: if anything looks 'wrong,' I'll get back to you asap.
yrs, Bill
“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the 'Universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest ... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.
This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires, and to affection for a few persons nearest us
Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures, and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Albert Einstein

Why is it that almost every time I click near the top of my browser, the page I am looking in gets removed from the tab list and made a new window ? Couldn't they make it less touchy ?
