Movie Quote Of The Day
A: Hey "B", ever wonder what those sparkly dots are up there?
B: "A", I don't wonder; I know.
A: Oh. What are they?
B: They're fireflies. Fireflies that, uh... got stuck up on that big bluish-black thing.
A: Oh, gee. I always thought they were balls of gas burning billions of miles away.
Which movie?

Godd old Auntie reports[^] that whores are having a tough time out there.
Reading the opening paragraphs proves they are subject to the usual economic assumption that supply and demand are indeed linked. How much longer will it be until they start to offer BOGOF deals and possibly Nectar points as well?

At least the weather guy in the radio this morning confirmed: sunny and 20-22 °C Saturday and Sunday. Now I cannot believe it so much, raining and foggy..

Since 1st April (yeah, I know), I have made just over £1000 of sales.
(Turned £280 profit, so pretty impressive)
Had I known how easy it was to make this much money this easily I would have done it years ago.
The prep work was hard.
Over 3000 product lines with 5 different suppliers.
I wrote an excel sheet that when you put in a product number it throws up the cheapest wholesaler and automatically gives me a set of sales prices (based on markup).
My sister works for a local rag and is arranging a set of flyers on the cheap.
Seems I did it just in time.
My MD just bought a new car, but bought it privately rather than a company vehicle.
Bells are ringing about my future.
I think the company has at least 2 more years but after that it may be an unsecure position.
I will be 48 then, a difficult age to get a serious position, so a private income may be my saving grace.
Still, with my sales income and rental property income I can take a major income hit and still be comfortable.
Worrying times though.
My major saving grace is that my contract ensures that if I am made redundant I will get quite a large lump sum.
(I have been here 17 years, so I will have to hang on until the end and grab the cash rather than jumping ship and losing all the seniority).
How safe is any job I wonder?
I think people need to plan for such eventualities.

are just utter dicks. A friend asked me to see if a domain name was available for an idea he has. No problem, says I. The name is registered at one of those scammers domain name services so I tried to find out how much they wanted. Can't do that. Have to make a bid. So I bid $1. Nope, can't do that. Minimum bid is $1000. WTE??? It simply isn't worth that.
So do a quick search on whois and the owner has an email address registered. I email him "how much do you want for the name?"
He replies "How much do you want to pay?" Seriously?
I responded " as the owner you must have some idea how much you want for it - I'm not going to try and guess what that is. Give me an idea"
His final reply "piss off".
WTE??? What is that about? Either you want to sell it or you don't. Everyone know how much they want for stuff. He wanted me to state an outrageous price that he would leverage me up for. But it's just a name. My pal can come up with another one. So the moron loses a sale - note that he has paid to hold the name for another 10 years by the looks of the whois entry.
I did email back once more: "No need to be rude - you've lost a sale". I'm sure he doesn't care.
Elephanting moron.

More cubicles have emptied out on our floor.
I walked around and did a little bit of looting.
I now have a bell on my desk next to a little sign that says, "Ring Bell For Service".

U.S. Judge Expresses Frustration at Apple's and Google's Use of Litigation as 'Business Strategy'[^]
While I certainly believe that any company should be able to patent a true innovation and defend that patent in court if needed, these 2 along with Samsung (to lesser degree) are becoming obnoxious.
Glad to see a judge "tell it like it is". Doubt it will help, but nice to see just the same.

He was the best dog we've ever had (the 7 others weren't slouches either, but Rambo was simply the best).
He came in as a month old puppy, and lived the rest of his life with us. And that would be a good 16 years.
He was an incredibly loyal, very intelligent, and a well mannered dog.
He lived a happy life, and was completely healthy almost until the last 3 days of his life.
He looked into my brother's eyes before he left, and I didn't have the courage to see his dead body, so I just went somewhere away for them to message me that it's all done. I then learnt that my brother left too, and my sister in law took care of it all with the help of a vet. She is one strong woman.
He's been given a funeral, and I hope he shall rest in peace forever.
I hope they give him good showers in heaven to care for his black shiny hair. I'm just feeling lost right now, but I know I'll be fine. "Real men drive manual transmission" - Rajesh.

Hi All,
I have created an installer for my application when its run it comes up with Publisher Unknown.
Digging around on MSDN it appears to use a command SignTool, which I tried in a Console/Dos Window it comes back as "'signtool' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Or you have typed rubbish. Stack Overflow you need a code signing certificate which is available for $179 a year or $499. Is this right so do I send my flaming box of dog do to MicroSharft now or what?

Ahhh, well I have a respite at work so thought I'd catch up with what's going on over here.
Been completely mental busy recently so haven't been keeping track - what have I missed?
On other news, I've got a nice shiny new phone, a HTC One - really rather good, heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a new phone out there.

My first computer was a Commodore VIC20. The Caps Lock key on it had a mechanical lock like on a pen, so that when you clicked it it would stay down until you clicked it again. Kind of a brutal form of non-volatile memory for retaining caps lock state. Did they not think to have a cheaper simpler switch and use software to handle the state?
Similarly, when you've just invented an optical disc which can store an unheard of 640MB of data on it, enough for an uncompressed album of music you might think that you'd make room for more metadata than a number representing the order of the tracks.
In both cases, clever things at the time yet the inventors missed the painfully obvious. An example perhaps of just how narrow our focus sometimes is.
Regards,
Rob Philpott.

For those of you who remember Mondays Post

I phoned my telephone provider and they told me that those calls are originated by an automatic dialling machine which takes the very first answer as valid. Then a human voice prentending beeing Microsoft will ask for your credentials and steel banking information, credit card info, etc... from your PC. They are now invastigating and will probably ask police to go further.
Yesterday got the same problem with german origin number.
Probably I will have to change my Fixed Phone number, bugger..

My Mac was recalled due to a potentially dodgy hard drive.
Took it into the Mac shop today to have it replaced ... Although I do have backups I'm still nervous - and have to wait until after the weekend to get it back .
4 days without it - looks like its back to windows world for a while!
Did find out that boot camp now supports windows 8 though, so looking forward to playing with wait on my 27 inched

I have closed a year a couple of days ago and wiped out all the history.
Then remembered that I hadn't moved it to the archive prior to running the year end.
The yells of fear were heard several towns over.
Thankfully, owing to me NOT running a scheduled backup yesterday, I still have Monday night's back-up, taken BEFORE I closed.
Sighs of relief all round.
That could have been...interesting.
