Islamist fighters in Mali have seized a town in government-controlled territory amid a military intervention by France.
Mr Le Drian [French Surrender Defence Minister] insisted France's campaign was "developing favourably".
So you lose ground and that is favourable? My guess is that we'll see Mali Islamists in Paris by the end of the month.

So they're not already there welcomed in with open arms and given a home?

Already there - as they are in the UK - pretty much every town, city and university in the UK has islamist propaganda centres often funded by the saudis (the source of the ideology) -yet try and build a church or a synagogue in Saudi Arabia - they will probably chop your head off.
So France are wasting time in Mali, we are wasting lives and money in Afghanistan while the Saudis announce a massive new propaganda centre in Kabul where they will churn out 1000s of people of the mindset we are supposed to have been fighting against for the last decade.
The saudis won 9/11 - we should congratulate them. Well done lads.

It's favorable for them. They've managed not to surrender their country so far.

Well, I think Caesar said it first (commenting on a combat situation where the Romans were driven off by the enemy):
Caius Iulius Caesar: "... and in a brillant tactical manoeuvre I advanced backwards ..."

On a serious note, we cannot lose ground, as we are actually not fighting on ground. For the moment, we are simply providing aeronautical support. The Malian army is loosing ground, but the french intervention kept the "rebels" from invading the whole country.
I think this is going to cause us a lot of troubles in the future; the fear of terrorists attack is probably the reason why nobody had dared to do anything in Mali up to now, even if it was known that some intervention was necessary for months. And maybe that there is no oil in Mali.
