For those not in the UK, this is a high speed rail link, initially between London and Birmingham, that is to take 20 years and 33 billion quid to build.
There is, of course, lots of opposition to it. It passes very close to where I currently live, and there is lots of opposition around here.
I'm not sure I see the need, and I do not think it will be well done.
I think I'd be more in favour if they were to do something interesting. I'm thinking along the lines of monorails or mag-lev like in Transport Tycoon.
I wouldn't mind a dirty great viaduct spanning the countryside if it looked interesting and made a space age noise each time a train whizzed by at a couple of hundred miles and hour.
Anyway, I was reading Why it takes 20 years to build[^] and it was a little bit interesting.
Some things you just don't think about, like they are going to have to dig up and then rebury 50,000 dead people.

It’s a lot faster than it takes currently if you’re on the slow train it can take generations, whole families have lived and died between stations

I think it says it all when you read that Brunel built the entire Great Western Railway in 5 years. The UK has lost its engineering spirit.

I those days it was a lot easier to build, less occupation and any that were in the way were usually either rich and probably shareholders in your company or poor and therefore of no consequence, and if a few huded navies died no problem there were plenty more

It's more a case of distributing revenues to working people, creating jobs, etc.
i.e. 32.9 billion will go into the pockets of friends of MPs, and the rest will be used to hire a few blokes with pick-axes and wheelbarrows to do the work -- hence the 20 year completion estimate.

Construction will take 9 years for the first stage, the process to get to the construction is still time taken for the project.

That's only if they hire two white-vansful of blokes with pickaxes and wheelbarrows, but that probably won't happen, because the MPs' buddies won't want their cuts reduced.
