I'm totally in love with the Outlook.com web mail user interface. But I've established everything over gmail. Gtalk, google groups, Phone contacts etc.
I wish I can configure my gmail in outlook.com!

Me too, I thought at first, from the information it gave, that you could use Outlook.com with an existing email address. It seems that is not the case, but if you find a solution please let us all know.
One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

I'm confused. I thought you can just add your gmail account to outlook and configure the pop and smtp settings as appropriate.

Yes, that is MS Outlook.
What I'm saying is about www.outlook.com[^]

Yes that is what I'm on about as well. Settings - add account - advanced or something like that.
You can then search Google to get all the necessary addresses and ports / SSL etc.

I registered for the heck of it and then thought, this really isn't much different from GMail, I see no compelling reason to use it. Just checked it now (had forgotten about it) and discovered 8 messages in my inbox from Microsoft about how great W8 is.

I guess MS has a soft corner for me. I found just 2 mails about W8.
I find the UI cleaner than gmail. And Gmail keeps experimenting with some annoying interface.
For example their new experiment with the simple mail editor. It tries to emulate Outlook.com interface. Simply a poor attempt by google.

Agreed. I stopped using that experiment rather quickly.

Yes, It is very clean and lightweight. also other services are also nicely integrated with the interface.
Also, Have you tried AOL Alto Mail[^]? Very nice UI, and it is just an interface and not a new email service from AOL. so you can use your Yahoo and Gmail Account with it. You can request an invite here.
