Oh man, those Nintendo Wiis are fun. Co-worker has one upstairs and I just spent half an hour smashing a ball around a tennis court. Pretty natural and you even get a rumble on impact with the ball.

Beats the pants off the cool-to-look-at-but-oh-so-boring Xbox 360 games.

OK, lets say it is a totally different experience and not really a competitor to the Xbox 360. But for a family, for kids, for non-technical people and for people who don't have hours to spend deep inside a game, the Wii is fun and probably a better choice.

For someone like me, the Wii is a good choice.

Once the Mario game comes out, the Wii will once again have the best game available for any current platform.

Have you played Lost Planet yet? The controls suck compared to Gears of War in my opinion.

Have to agree with Todd - you're on craic*.

I've played around on the Wii a bit and I love the damned thing (will be getting one as soon as they are back in stock at Target) but to say it beats the pants off Xbox 360 games - you MUST be on craic* Poke tongue | ;-P

Was up until 3am this morning playing online Star Trek Legacy and chatting with people while playing and coordinating the defense of space stations. Before that spent about 2 hours playing Viva Piñata (ehhh, it's a really macho game guys - honestly) - one of the most addictive games I've ever played.

Games like PGR 3, GoW, The Lord of the Rings BFME II, are just so damn cool when playing alone but when you start going online - simply amazing. Nothing like being in Redmond and racing my brother back in Waterford with the abuse flying left right and centre as he side swipes me on the last bend of a 20 min race in PGR or playing GoW in cooperative mode with a work mate over Xbox Live.

You can't get that on a PC (the experience is just not the same - it's just not as integrated) and you can't get it on the Wii.

I wasn't a console fan until I got the 360 before Christmas - I was always in the "I can do it on the PC too and it's just as good" boat, but since I've had the 360 I'm a big console fan and I KNOW that it's just not the same on a PC.

I have my nice and powerful PC, I have my 360, and I'll be getting my Wii. 360 will be king of those three though - primarily because of Xbox Live. Oh, and I have a nice 32" HDTV which makes the 360 look AMAZING.

Seriously though - I personally prefer the online aspect of the 360 over the Wii. Just a personal preference and I completely understand why others are different.

*btw, I know you're not on craic Smile | :) Just too much Guinness.

After playing half life and other games on the pc for years we got an xbox the christmas before last and my immediate thought when I fired it up was "the graphics suck". Being so used to playing on a pc with let's face it a million times better graphics than a tv set, you really have to have not played any games on a half decent pc to not be dissapointed by the graphics on tv.

You are crazy. My 51 inch TV and 1080i from my 360 is better then your pc monitor. Sitting at a desk is for work.

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberJohn Cardinal17 Jan '07 - 8:09
Maybe, but I didn't have a 1080i at the time, I do now but my old xbox is gathering dust.
Probably the majority of people with a pc still have a way worse resolution tv set.
GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberToddHileHoffer17 Jan '07 - 8:15
Well, the xbox came out in 2001. That was six years ago. A six year old PC wouldn't look to good right now either.

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberBrian Delahunty17 Jan '07 - 8:57
Plus, if they have a good PC monitor they can just plug their 360into that Smile | :)

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberBrian Delahunty17 Jan '07 - 8:54
That's like getting a Ferrari and using regular gas - the performance will suck but it will still work. When you buy a sports car you use proper fuel. When you buy an Xbox 360 (or PS3) you should use proper equipment.

By the way - you can plug your 360 into your PC monitor too and get Hi-Def gaming - just so you know (you need the VGA cable - I have one here that I'm not using so if you want it, let me know)

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberJohn Cardinal17 Jan '07 - 9:22
That's assuming you have a 360, I have a transparent case older xbox, don't know the model but it's over a year old.
GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberBrian Delahunty17 Jan '07 - 10:15
Ah - well then you're comparing a 6 year old console with a brand new one!

Actually I was thinking of finding out what cool hacks can be done with it since I'm probably not going to use it for anything else anymore.
GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinsitebuilderDavid Stone17 Jan '07 - 12:44
You can load Linux on it (like every device under the sun). And they've got an installation to run MythTV[^]'s front end on the original Xbox. Most of the stuff you'll want to do doesn't even require a mod chip.

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberJohn Cardinal17 Jan '07 - 14:10
Cool, I was hoping for something like that, thanks!
GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinsitebuilderPaul Watson17 Jan '07 - 7:39
Crikey! Microsoft must be paying you a ton mate. HDTVs, Xbox 360s, Wiis, games, broadband etc. etc. Wink | ;)

And the Guinness is still good here though it is only a once a week affair I am having with it. No more throwing up on your couch I promise.

I'd like to try a racing game on the Wii where I reckon the controller should be pretty cool. As for playing with other people the Xbox Live system is very cool, I agree. But the thing with the Wii is the person you are playing against is right next to you and is falling about the place trying to hit the ball back to you.

It is different and refreshing.

BTW, my other hobby (besides gaming) is brewing beer. I have my homebrew on tap in my basement along with my games. Right now I have a stout on tap that is quite similar to Guiness but a bit more choclatey.

What's your opinion on that game? I'm finding it a bit slow and cumbersome. I mean, fly, target, shoot, wait for turn, wait for turn, hyperspeed, target, shoot, wait for turn...

I felt like that for a while. It took me a while to get used to the control system - since then it's been good fun. I played through on Captain difficulty to the TNG era before I went online to play - I've had some great matches since then - especialy using the defiant (cloak is so cool) and hiding in nebulas to surprise people.

Chris S Kaiser wrote:

Don't wait - switch ship quickly and attack from a different angle. Or put power to engines and drop speed to 1/4 so you can turn faster.

It did take me a while to actually start enjoying this game and I'm guessing it's not for everybody. Plus there are a good few bugs around the entire online experience. What's your gamertag?

GeneralRe: Wiiiiiiii PinmemberDouglas Troy17 Jan '07 - 7:27
I've seen the system, I've seen the demos, and it just looks fun.

The entire "get up off your duff and move" concept is very appealing; not something video games are "known for", that's for certain.

I realize that actually playing tennis and/or going bowling is far better, but then, when it's 20(f) outside, like it is today, having the option to actually play tennis, indoors, without having to say, be a multi-millionaire, does have it's appeal.

Once the price of these systems comes down, and all the bugs, H/W issues have been resolved, I will probably get one.

Yea. Yea ... that's it ... I missed that 7-10 split because of a ... bug. NO! It was, uh, my controller! YEA! My controller froze. Yea. In REAL life I would have picked that up with no problem. Yea. That's the ticket.

I played a Wii a couple of weeks ago, and will probably get one. I thought it was a blast. I like the idea of not adding yet another sit-on-my-ass form of entertainment to the list.

People complain about the plain graphics for Wii Sports, but i think they're perfect. Sure you can find more "realistic" sound and graphics elsewhere, but I don't really care. Just like I don't really care how impressive the CGI is for a movie. The graphics are light hearted and funny, which is exactly what I what I want for most of my video gaming.

Heck, I just find most console games to be boring.

But, the Wii looks like something all together different. I must admit the few times I've played around with one it was fun and amusing even with the terrible graphics. I am curious to see how far they can take their 'new' gaming paradigm.

We've been having fun with our Wii. And I think you're right about Nintendo going after a more family market. My wife has been having fun with it (she is not a gamer by any stretch) and is currently the house boxing champ. My son who is more of a gamer has been enjoying Zelda a lot. My 4-year-old daughter has a blast with tennis, golf, and bowling... and all four of us can play together. It's not just that we can, we all actually want to with this thing. It's well suited to get gamers & non-gamers together for some social fun. Even our 85-year-old neighbor played a round of bowling with us and enjoyed himself.

I'm pleasantly surprised with how well young and old alike in my life have been able to take to the Wii together and enjoy the experience.

I have a PC High End/XBOX/XBOX 360, games are amazing where you usually kill 1000 guys, run at high speed in LA street or fly a F18 over the sea with a high adrenaline and all the sh.. on board, but I have a kid too.

XBOX 360 games sucks for kid generation, I'm thinking buy a Wii to have fun with my son Smile | :) .

So far viva piñata is the only game that I saw suitable for kids and still is for grownup kids.

If you want top games go for XBOX360
If you want fun games go for Wii

If you want high quality games and also have fun, buy both.

The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are all about how many polygons, pixels, shaders etc. they can render per second. The hype is mainly around their graphical capabilities. So any advances elsewhere in the industry in graphics will date them.

With the Wii the main hype is around how much fun it is. That is much harder to date with advances. The Wii has nice graphics but they are not a patch on the other system. So it isn't the reason you buy it and so it isn't as important if the industry advances in graphics.

I am waiting our Wii and none of stores nearby have them in stock.

Nintendo installed demo Wii stations in all the shopping malls in this area. People are crazy playing the games there. I played Baseball, Tennis, Bowling games. Man, it brought my childhood. I don't care it's mall or home, I was so involved the game. Wii rocks!!

Good thing we already got bunch of Gamecube games.
