I had a similar problem with having a 250GB 7000RPM IDE drive on a machine running at 633Mhz (Flip chip Celeron, the board was a Tri-somethignrather Congac ++... an OEM eMachines board).. The cabling is one of the things that is most overlooked and cheapest to replace. If you still get faults with a different cable, then look at the hard drive itself. Stability.
