Is it a more powerful bomb that the "Linux take over the desktop this year" bomb which got dropped regularly since 1986?

C’mon, stop for a while and think what a giant effort is to create from scratch a fully functional operating system nowadays. Thousands pieces of different hardware, hundred of technologies, development tools, office and utility packages, frameworks and appies/all the way from Win32 to DirectX/, networking, servers, gaming, UI etc. And you need to make all this crap stable and fast!!!
It looks to me like game of “chicken” from the days of cold war: You created Bing we will answer with an OS!!!
IMO Google are making a mistake and throwing money on the wind. MS are fully capable to make Bing competitive to Google, but I don’t think that Google are able to create something near to XP or Weven and their tools for reasonable period of time.
Imagine that Sony decides to start producing jet fighters - a joke right? They have the money, but they don’t have the experience.

Yes, sure – some basic OS with integrated browser, docs online, full Java and J2EE support, Oracle support, some Java based IDE, C++ compiler without comprehensive IDE and framework, some image processing application, media player and limited hardware and networking support.
The question is: are you going to replace your fully operational Windows or even Linux and all programs working on them with this new gadget? The answer is easy…

But they're not creating a new OS. All they're writing is a custom window manager for (a presumably) stripped down linux. There're jillions of existing distros that they can pick and choose from to drop it on top of.

If Google announce that they are planning to invest 20 billion in the next four years for creating a REAL OS – this will be other cattle of fish. If this going to be just the next Linux distribution with Chrome support, I’m not very excited.

The benefit from my point of view would be that having a Linux Distro with Google behind it might result in many more drivers being made available for Linux devices and if it reaches a decent level of acceptance developers might start to write code that runs on multiple platforms.

Yes - you have a good point, but this will not be the first time when someone tries this. First the IBM supported Linux and also the German government funds some distributions.

They are not nor did Apple when they started Mac OSX. Also Google is starting out with a Linux base on NetBooks. I think it is a good move.
Also note the browser wars, no one at one point thought any one could surpass IE. Now almost all the browsers are better than IE.

Yep there can be various standards but I based mine on the following:-
1. Overall JavaScript Engine Speed
2. Support for CSS level While some browsers pass CSS3 acid test IE does not.
I am talking on a purely technical basis not on emotions or preference etc.

whoohoo, IE loads a webpage .05s slower than Chrome/FF. Not exactly a big deal.
whoohoo, IE doesn't pass some standards test that doesn't affect how pages actually display. Not exactly a big deal. Show me a page that doesn't render properly in IE that wasn't designed specifically to not render properly in IE and I just MIGHT start caring. Over the years and countless browser debates, I've NEVER had anyone able to answer this challenge (even back when IE6 was still in use and IE5 before that). The only people who care about this crap are web developers (of which I am one). Customers and the general population don't give a rats behind that IE doesn't pass some standards test. They just want it to work. And IE just works. Always has, and most likely always will. Until it doesn't I will continue to use it and I will continue to preach that it IS the best browser available.

Ok I don't want to make it another discussion of browsers and what is better that is why I narrowed my criteria down to "technical".
The main discussion here was technical challenges in building an OS that might take over an established OS. I was trying to show a parallel at one time it was thought very difficult that any browser will overtake IE technically. Now all the browser have overtaken it. Market penetration and usability is not at all the point of discussion.

Your definition of "Best" appears to be equivalent to "Has the largest market share". No one will intentionally break compatibility with the market leader even when it is the source of the vast majority of their problems, any more than they'll make something that is too slow to run acceptably with it even if it means dropping features that all other platforms can support easily.

Exactly. My favourite feature of IE is the inbuilt download manager with resume support.

Of course IE has a built in download manager. It is called "save" or "open" buttons. What more do you need in a browser? seriously?
As for resume support. I don't even remember the last time I needed this. Definately not within the last 10 years and that includes downloading several GB files on a fairly regular basis.

Um..perhaps you didn't read the official blog post about it. They are *not* making a general purpose operating system. They are making a platform that does little more than host the Chrome browser. They are also not making it from scratch, it's based on Linux.
This is the sort of thing that I bet a couple of linux os development dudes in their basement could cook up in a couple of weeks.
