The worst case I've seen is one(!) ram stick being packaged in a huge box (20"x20"x8" or something like that) full of bubble wrap. Who packaged it? HP... Seriously. WTF????

If you've seen UPS/DHL/FedEx guys handle those boxes, you'd say otherwise. And what you see is nothing compared to what happens at the hubs.
We have first hand accounts of a student who once worked there, and we've seen pics from customers how some packages arrived... now everything we ship must survive a 2m free fall (packaged).
Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

I know well what happens; I worked with a guy who worked at the Fedex Chicago hub through school. He had some interesting stories to tell. 
But it's still extreme overkill, and further, this package fits inside a larger package that serves as a display rack. It's delivered on a pallet, shrink-wrapped and strapped. I've seen missiles shipped with less protection...

Mechanical HDs aren't designed to operate in an environment with multiple g accelerations. Missles have more of their shock absorbing ability built internally.

HD's with heads in rest position are amazingly resistant. However, missiles are better equipped to defend themselves - even the worst UPS manhandler (boxhandler?) will carefully place a missile

Actually that level of packaging is needed to survive rough handling. A layer (or three) of bubblewrap won't protect against an HD getting slammed around in the warehouse/shipping facility, delivery truck. Heavier duty packaging is one of the reasons that namebrand drives have lower DOA levels.

So, I decided to change my booking for my flight tomorrow. The flight I want, is $300 a person. I paid about $140 a person for the flight we have already. The cost with change fees is $260. There's fees for doing the booking on the phone, but the website doesn't allow me to make a change.
I am expecting them to call me next week, as I am flying to the US. They call every time to say 'we've had some cancellations, would you like to upgrade to business.' There was a time when they upgraded me as a reward for being Gold, now they call me and try to talk me into spending my points. I used to routinely get the over wing seat, now they sell that for $160 each way. QANTAS has gone to the dogs IMO. I think Virgin should offer to give me instant gold status if I start flying with them, on the basis of my Gold status with QANTAS. If I could use their lounges when I travel, that would be enough for me to switch.

I think that while the benefits have dropped, I still get access to QANTAS lounges and that stops me from changing. Virgin has a new service to LA, and if they want to build it, their best bet is to attract people who fly often. Having proven that I am one of those people, I should be desirable to them as a client, and if all I want is a lemonade and a shower in their lounge, it would cost them next to nothing to not make me wait a year to get that ( which I would not do, if I have to wait a year to have a shower at the airport again, I'd rather suffer QANTAS )

I recently renewed my car insurance and that fact I have never claimed from my previous insurer induced my new insurer to give me a nice big discount.
What is the plane flights version of a no claims bonus?
Lets lobby for transferable frequent flyer discounts.

Because the no claims history indicates the risk level you pose to them, and the cost of your premium is based on the assessed risk level.

So I want to have a frequent flyer discount from another airline because it is more likely that I will fly with them again. Someone who only flies once or twice does not need the encouragement to change their usual airline.
I fly to Italy frequently and a discounted fare from another airline would induce me to fly with them in preference in the future. I have friends who have flown to Italy once and so today's price won't affect a future choice as there is no future choice.
It's al about repeat buisness vs one off. Insurance is always repeat buisness because you have to have it. The average annual cost to the insurer is the same if I crash or not because they insure good and bad drivers. I personally may be a low risk, but if I never crash I am still paying for the claims of others. I know they claim it is about risk, but assesed risk level is just another way of keeping your custom.
A more fair system of insurance would say that once your premiums paid have covered any possible claim you pay no more. Unfortunately, because I could drive into a top of the range sports car that puts the maximum possible claim into the impossible to pay range.

The purpose behind frequent flyer points is to retain customers (they are known as 'loyalty points' in other industries). You keep flying with an airline because you get benefits that are only available if you keep flying with that airline.
If every airline allowed the transfer of points, they become (if you'll pardon the pun) pointless.

I think Microsoft should grant me "must be fixed ASAP" status on MS connect, when I start using VS2010, on the basis of my extensive experience with VC6. If they'd give it to me one month early, that would be enough for me to switch.
