How can you become a consultant? Does MBA helps after Software Engineering

Been in this role for around 4 years and worked with .NET(C#)/PHP(ZEND) etc. It's bit early but I kind of in a mood to move to consultant side of it in next 3 years, instead of writing code day in day out for whole my life..

What's the process to be a good consultant(by good i mean good pay cheque). Am planning to join MBA from a reputed institution next year, but what else can i do to be sure am in a right direction?
