While the French plan on using 100 firefighters, and other personnel, to seal-off approaches to the mountain named the "Pic de Bugarach," in the Occitan (southern) region, which many "new age" air-heads believe is either, or both:

One of the few safe places on the earth one can survive the Mayapocalypse ... Or, that the mountain contains an alien space-craft that will emerge on 21st. December: [1]

However, "south of the border:"

"In Guatemala, the national tourism bureau is organizing all sorts of festivities, including a "New Dawn for Humanity" summit in Tikal, a major ancient Maya city. Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and U2 will provide entertainment." [^]

I'd rather be at the Guatemalan concert, thanks, but I would be grateful if the end-of-the-world occurred before the circus-in-a-bloated-body that is Knight Elton John started performing. Ideally, for me, U2 would come on first, do their set, and then: finito.
