Question"Silverlight"memberVuNic9 Dec '12 - 20:53
I see everybody saying Silverlight is gone, Silverlight is dead.
But all the namespace & classes are still alive underneath in W8 Metro Apps. The canvas, Shapes, StoryBoards all the constructs are still there. And in Wp7 they called it SilverLight App , now they've just removed the word "Silverlight" and made it "Blank XAML App"

What does a "SilverLight's dead" mean? Does that mean the Sivlerlight run time is no more? But how does it matter to the developer? Who cares if it runs on SLRT or WinRT?

Or does it just mean the SilverLight on Web? which was competing with Flash. is it dead now? Yeah everybody knows it.

Starting to think people post kid pics in their profiles because that was the last time they were cute - Jeremy.

Only a select few idiots are actually claiming the death of Silverlight, it's just that the original fuckwit worked for Microsoft. He now walks around on one leg, the other firmly stuck down his throat!

We committed to SL a while ago and I see no alternative LOB platform (other than aspx). If there is a migration path to Win8 even better. I still figure we have another 5+ years on the current platform.

Pattern:

works with SL: "SL is not dead, only baby-eating lunatics would say that"
doesn't work with SL: "SL is sooo dead, it was so smart not putting any long term projects on it"
Consultant: "Where's my check? Oh, under the golden cigar box. I have to tell the maid to not move it when she re-champagnes the pool"

Maybe not dead, but it surely isn't going to get very old.

Define very old I'll quite comfortable to get another 5 years out of our apps by which time another platform may well come along. Eventually MS is going to have to either come up with an alternative LOB/Web platform or we'll move elsewhere.

I believe it's supported until 2020 or so, so that's not too bad. I do hope they will come up with an alternative, because I don't think html 5 will cut it.

I don't think there is any support for HTML5 as a LOB platform. 2020 is just fine, I'll be retired or dead by then!

The way I understand it is that it does not matter whether its Silverlight or WPF now.
They have an approach called XAML based programming. This uses xaml code (styles, templating etc) to build UI.
This is based on SL / WPF development done earlier.

Microsoft, or the art of naming, always great stories. Smile | :)
