Yeah, having a having a Socialist in the White House who thinks he has a right to dictate what I'm allowed to own makes me itchy, but then I'm the harmless sort who wouldn't assault a fly, unless it was open and female.
I've long missed my Browning BLR .243, and have been searching for a replacement. Several dealers have told me that Browning no longer makes a lever-action in my favorite caliber, so I settled for a bolt action, a Savage Axis .243[^]. It turns out that this was a rather good choice, not only cheap, but receiving better reviews than the Remington model 770 I was considering, but unable to locate.
Consistent with my usual luck, of course, while searching out reviews for this gun, I actually found a source of the BLR I loved years ago, and may just have to buy one of those, as well. But at three times the price, I can wait a bit. Even more ridiculous is the fact that not a single store in town has any .243 Winchester ammo in stock, despite it being a relatively unpopular caliber. The .243 is considered a "lady's" gun, though anyone who reads the specs would see it as a sniper's weapon. High velocity, low recoil, good muzzle energy all make for a gun that's easy for a girly to shoot, but she can shoot it accurately for about 300 yards; don't piss her off. For me, having a light frame, the low recoil makes it perfect, and at about 7 lbs, this thing is easy to carry all day, looking for wabbits.
Although I wouldn't take this thing out for anything bigger than a mule deer, my lady has bagged an elk with this same caliber, so I know it can be done. For me, I'll stick to venison, or varmints, however many legs they happen to walk on.
Will Rogers never met me.
