I return to the stage to perform comedy. Well, I actually returned last week after a month break. Was little rusty, but going to make up for it tonight. Tonight when you're having dinner or a drink, remember you could be trying to entertain 50 some people for 8 minutes.
Face your fears! It will change your life and is the best advice you can take to heart.
PS. Did you know 28% of people are more afraid of public speaking than dying?
I know, we have Everclear here for those that hate themselves enough to require 90% abv. 40oz of a malt beverage in the course of minutes led to not so good comedy. I doubt Poitin would lead to anything better.
Friday it was improv, which is actually more nerve wracking than stand up in my opinion (having done both about equal amounts.)
Stand up is horrifying in the sense of "what if what I found funny enough to write down, they find stupid?" It's the material which gets judged the most, which is very personal, as you took the time to write it.
Improv is horrifying in the sense that you walk onto the stage going, "I have no idea what the hell is about to happen." It is incredibly easy to freeze, miss a reference, misinterpret a line, generally make an ass of oneself. I have found that there is so much horrible improv out there, that just not sucking at it puts you into the top 50%.
I just learned something wonderful today. I always thought a "jiffy" was just a term meaning "a short time". I use it all the time. I never knew that it actually means the period of time between alternating power cycles (so 1/50 or 1/60th of a second)
"In computing, a jiffy is the duration of one tick of the system timer interrupt. It is not an absolute time interval unit, since its duration depends on the clock interrupt frequency of the particular hardware platform."
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.-John Q. Adams You must accept one of two basic premises: Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not alone in the universe. And either way, the implications are staggering.-Wernher von Braun Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.-Albert Einstein
I've been an electrical engineer for over 30 years, and never heard the term "jiffy" applied to the period of an ac current cycle before. It hertz to think about it, so a citation is definitely needed.

The earliest technical usage for jiffy was defined by Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875–1946). He proposed a unit of time called the "jiffy" which was equal to the time it takes light to travel one centimeter (approximately 33.3564 picoseconds). It has since been redefined for different measurements depending on the field of study
