After 12 years with the same company, I am at a point where I have to look for something else for financial reasons. We have been low on resources the past 5-6 years and I have spent most of my time maintaining and updating our legacy MFC projects.
The projects have been updated to VS2010 and through the years I have been involved with all facets of this large code base, but as far as incorporating new technology, I have been limited to wading knee-deep into the C# world, dipping my toes into ASP.NET MVC4 and a splash of WCF.
I was afraid this would count against me when I, Monday last week, contacted the recruiter who placed me 12 years ago, but when I said I have been doing C++ the past 15 years mixed with 15-20% C# the past 4 years or so, he was all "Dude! That's terrific, you are ahead of the curve". He later told me that when I said I had been a bit stuck in legacy development, he was thinking "oh dear, he is going to tell me he is still doing Delphi or something like that" .
Anyway, he had a company in mind and things moved quickly:
- Thursday I had a phone interview with the hiring manager who gave me their basic test over the phone.
- Friday I had an on-site interview with the manager of the Engineering department. That went great, but he thought I was too senior for the contract position they were trying to fill. He still wanted me in the company, so he "passed me on" to another department.
- Yesterday (Monday) I had a phone interview with the manager of that department and next step was for me to have a couple more phone interviews and do a major interview on Friday.
- I just got word that they are going to skip straight to having the major interview tomorrow (Wednesday). It will last for about 4 hours and I will be meeting with a total of 8 people...
It seems like a great company with awesome people and I hope I get the job, but I obviously don't have it yet. Even if it falls through, it has been a great experience for me so far.
