There is a long line of people who disagree with me, but my opinion is that getting a particular degree is more important than where you get it (if the choice is getting one at college 'x' versus not getting it).

I am 58 and went back to school last year for classes towards a Master's. I was the oldest one in each class (including the professor), but had no trouble with the work. My work was truly my own - nobody would talk to me, even for collaboration - but I learned a lot, had fun and did well. As a software developer, my brain got into the groove of being a student again without any trouble (I'm not sure that a language or Poli Sci major could say the same). I quit because I couldn't fund the next step. I did well academically, and if I had the $$$ I would continue (I couldn't capture the track where the college paid for it - I think it was my age. You might do better...).

At my stage in career and life, the degree is more important than the university, but a younger person might want to look harder at the choices.
