Well I can see 2 benefits for them (despite me being a Microsoft enthusiast!)
 
- Migrate from Windows XP to Linux, obviously cost mattered
- In house control (they said), well makes sense they probably can benefit from tailor made embedded system on their satelite in a way that was not available on Windows!
 
And while I think, for example, that WIndows 8 is a great technical achievement (UX not so much I agree), the benefit over Windows XP maybe do not matter that much in a a satelite hey!
