GeneralMovie Rating System PinprofessionalCollin Jasnoch26-Feb-14 8:39
I had been under the assumption that over the years guidance rating had actually become lax. By that I mean lower ratings had been allowing more vulgar, violence, and sexual innuendo.

I was mistaken.

Last night I was sitting with my (young) children and they were wanting to watch something. My daughter was struggling to find something on Netflix. I will often find an older movie or show I recall from my younger years and they do tend to enjoy it. In this case with the recent passing of Harold Ramis my mind zeroed in on Ghostbusters.
I had recalled the "dogs" (gate keeper and key holder) and figured that was what may be questionable (my kids use to get scared easy). So I double checked the rating.

PG

Ok, that should be fine. If I see my kids getting sqeemish with the evil dogs I can ease the worries etc.

Not too long into the movie I began to realize the lack of rating on vulgar. I am pretty sure every swear word is used in the movie except the F bomb.
Forgot entirely about the scene towards the end -

Stantz to the Mayor: "This man is %@%#-less"
EPA Guy: "These men something something or nother"
Mayor: "Is this true?"
Venkmen: "Its true. This man has no @#@#"

Well that was actually not so bad. My kids often miss quick words. Recently we did watch Planes Trains and Automobiles and the scene where Martin says
"First, you will wipe that elephanting smile off your elephanting face because I am not in the elephanting moood as I went out to your elphanting lot, and there was no elephanting car. I then had to elephaniting walk through the elephanting lot and cross the elephanting highway to your elephanting desk to ask you..."
and on and on. My wife and I looked at each other with the Oh oh look. Yep there it was. My youngest said "Hahaha he keeps saying elephanting", having no idea what she just said.
Had our little talk all was well.

Anyway, none of those scenes in Ghostbusters (where vulgar is used excessively) so the words breezed by the children. However, the ghost trying to give Stantz a BJ got was noticed and got them asking "What is she doing?" D'Oh! |
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet.

The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.
