An underground coal fire is ongoing at a mine in Soma, Manisa, Turkey. The fire began on 13 May 2014 at a mine owned by Turkey's largest coal producer, Soma Kömür İşletmeleri A.Ş.. The fire was started by an explosion suspected to have been caused by electrical equipment. Because the fire occurred at the mine's shift change, the exact number of miners underground at the time is unknown; the number of trapped workers could be as high as 800.
At least 200 people have died as a result of the fire.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced the number of dead has risen to 232.
Take your pick: Presidency of Religious Affairs announces that prayer will be held for Soma on following Friday in all mosques in Turkey.
Pope Francis made an appeal for prayer for the miners who died in Soma mining disaster.
Personally I'd pin more of my hopes on the mine rescue teams. Awful situation.
His mum has posted on his Facebook page that he died this morning, it hasn't made the news sites yet.
I first posted about him a few weeks ago when he had made his final post and was expected to die. His lung had collapsed and he couldn't talk anymore. He hung on for a few days before couching up a tumour, his lung reinflated and a few days later he was able to leave hospital.
He was able to then break a world record to tick something else off his bucket list.
A day or two ago however his condition again deteriorated and he was back in hospital, tumours again blocking his air ways and his family said it was not looking good and he could no longer communicate.
When he first hit the national news a few weeks ago he brought out the best in the nation and donations to his just giving page soared to over three million.
Then he brought out the worst in some as people began to complain that he wasn't dead enough and took to Twitter to complain that everyone who had donated has been conned.
As I said last time he faced cancer head on, and he done good.
