Um, Dracula was written based off of the legend called Vampyre, done by John Polidori during Mary Shelley's summary write-athon during the early part of the 1800s. John Polidori used one of Mary Shelley's most numerous books in the mansion to produce Vampyre, the Holy Bible. The main character in Vampyre was modeled after Lord Byron, the first person to ever put Vampires into poems.

Vlad the Impaler on the other hand was known for literally making the streets run red with blood from his favorite method of execution - impaling people (hence the Tepes or Impaler part). His surname just happens to be Dracul (translated as Dracula for us English speaking people).

Although it would be nice if the two bloodiest rulers of the time (Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathory) had been the subject of the vampire mythos, those legends never arose in those regions until the 1700s, several hundred years after their deaths.

If you doubt me, read Bram Stoker's own working notes on how he came about the characters and story for Dracula... And if you doubt those printings, go visit the museum in Pennsylvania that has his original notes for display for you to read for yourself...

Anyways - it helps to know your authors...
