To celebrate 1 year of membership:
I am putting together a list of CP forum etiquette, please add your thoughts below.
-No programming questions in the lounge, you will get "killed" for this. (if it's in your sig, you might get killed for it)
-People don't usually read your bio, so don't put info important to questions there
-Be very specific in very few words
-If a post is really long, there is a low change of it getting read
-Very long code snippets turn people off
-There are people from many different cultures here, something you think is an insult may not be intended as an insult.
-Spwelling Matwers (Please spellcheck your posts...)
-Post in the right forums
-Don't crosspost
-Don't SHOUT
-Make your subject line brief and descriptive
-Use small snippets of code "I'm getting a problem with this line", not "here's all of my code, where is my problem?"
-Code looks ugly if it is not flaged as code, or HTML tags are turned off
-Profanity is not nice to read, although a few use quite a bit anyways (John Simmons comes to mind)
-Don't post homework
-If someone says thay you have posted homework, but you haven't, don't be too concerned. It has happened to people who graduated 30 years ago.
If other members would add their thoughts and tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

From what I have seen, SHOUTING is like going up to someone and screaming in their face.

Probably because we are programmers. We look at code all day long, so seeing code in an interface is normal, not "substandard"

In the programming forums this is very useful. In the Lounge and Soapbox this would constrain the interaction. What makes them so interesting is that the topic can change.

Why not? If someone has said something I agree or a joke I sometimes just vote a 5 or post a smilie. If you think it adds nothing then you've not been on the receiving end. If I post a joke I appreciate the odd smilie or laughing face in return. It shows that people enjoyed it, even although they have nothing more to add.

This would definitely make the soapbox boring if unsustantiated claims were banned. A lot of these claims are mearly opinion anyway and everyone is entitled to an opinion (whether you like it or not)

I agree with that... But on the other hand, it is easier said than done. Everyone has opinions on things already and shifting opinion can be difficult especially when that opinion has been built on actual experience.

For those new to message boards please try to follow a few simple rules when posting your question.
1. Choose the correct forum for your message. Posting a VB.NET question in the C++ forum will end in tears.
2. Be specific! Don't ask "can someone send me the code to create an application that does 'X'. Pinpoint exactly what it is you need help with.
3. Keep the subject line brief, but descriptive. eg "File Serialization problem"
4. Keep the question as brief as possible. If you have to include code, include the smallest snippet of code you can.
5. If you are posting source code with your question, place it inside <pre></pre> tags, or click the "Ignore HTML tags in this message" check box.
6. Be courteous and DON'T SHOUT. Everyone here helps because they enjoy helping others, not because it's their job.
7. Please do not post links to your question in one forum from another, unrelated forum (such as the lounge). It will be deleted.
8. Do not be abusive, offensive, inappropriate or harass anyone on the boards. Doing so will get you kicked off and banned. Play nice.
9. If you have a school or university assignment, assume that your teacher or lecturer is also reading these forums.
10. No advertising or soliciting.
11. We reserve the right to move your posts to a more appropriate forum or to delete anything deemed inappropriate or illegal.
