I had a friend who worked in an IT my company. He was performing average in the company and so the company director decided to send him off with the experience letter without any prior information. My friend was really shocked after being faithful he really didnt deserved this.Atleast he should have got a warning from the director himself about his average performance before sending him off ,so that he could have put in some effort.They gave him the experience certificate and told him they are not terminating him as they are giving him the experience documents even after he pleaded them for giving him one chance.My friend used to be a hardworker,sincere and good guy.But the real unprofessional behaviour of that company and its director came to know to him when he joined another company and when they did the background verification, his previous company(who sent him off) gave him the feedback as they are terminating him and he is not eligible for re-hiring. We were allshocked with this unprofessional behaviour, if they decided to send him off from their company and feel not eligible for their company why would they interfear if he joins in another company and telling them not to select him.How can they decide he is unfit for other company's work just because he didnt fit well in their companys work. He was a legitimate employee hardworker,sincere but was an average (but i know he can improve)he never deserved this. I feel for him i hope atleast in future and the company he working now he comes up with flying colours and more importantly they treat him professionally.

Actually this is the purpose of background verification. But I agree that unless the changes (why he was laid off) are severe the x company should not give a bad report about the individual.
In a normal (this normally use to be in the policy of the company) case when someone's performance is not up to the mark then he/she is given sometime to improve himself.
In the above case company may not be interested in giving another chance so they might have terminated giving the background verification as reason.
The problem is they were so decent in sending him off and said they are not terminating him as his skillset is not matching that company. In that case, how can they say he is not unfit at all for any work (ineligible for rehiring).
His skillset may be matching his new company or may be he can give out a fresh start and do well. But why would they give such a report telling not to hire that employee again is the question.
