I assume you are referring to the definition of marriage? That is the only thing I can think of that you are referring to. And no, marriage is not a political issue. Just because it appears on a ballot does not mean it is solely a political issue.
Separation of church and state does not even mean what you think. It means the state shall not establish a religion. Read what it actually says.

For example, if someone that is in the headlines (lets say John Doe) is being charged with fraud but it is well known that they go scuba diving on the weekend.
