I'm thinking of dual booting Windows 7 with one of the latest versions of Ubuntu. I'm curious which would be the better way to go: installing Windows first and then Ubuntu, or the other way around. For those that have gone down this road, what insights can you offer?

While I haven't dual booted in many years I have been administrating CentOS servers for several years and playing with Ubuntu and Fedora on the desktop recently.
You have to go Windows first and then what ever version on Linux you want to use. The reason is the Windows installation likes to believe it is the only game in town and will generally blow the boot sector away and install it's own. Linux is nicer and if it does replace the boot sector it places the existing OS information in it's boot loader so you get the choice of both OS's.
I have read about changing the Windows boot loader to accomodate Linux, but I haven't tried it and wouldn't really like to touch it with a ten foot pole as the saying goes.

I would ALWAYS go with installing Windows first.... back in the day, Windows always overwrote the MBR and therefore you couldn't boot to other OS's present in the system until you fixed what Windows broke. I believe they have since fixed that little annoyance, but I'd still trust Linux to know how to handle other coexistant operating systems better than Windows would.

Are you asking how to set your network settings on your RHL box so you can see other computers on your network and also get to the internet?
Can you see the other computers but not get to the internet?
Are you trying to do this in the GUI or at the CLI?

What's your problem? ...RH usually has rather straight forward settings for hooking up to a network... I've never really had issues with it.

I'm not a network/hardwre person, so bear with me.
I have a laptop connected wirelessly that I can't see in Network Neighborhood. If I connect it with cable, I can then see it. The firewall on the laptop is off. All the other pc's in the office can see each other in Network Neighborhood.
I could use some help troubleshooting this.

That can happen for a number of reasons...
0. In newer versions of Windows, you have to tell Windows that you're in a trusted zone or else it blocks certain services. Make sure you've specified that you're in a home or work network as opposed to a public network.
1. Are you sure your wifi network can even access the rest of the network? In some places, the wifi is isolated so that you can't even access the rest of the network or placed in a different subnet so that there's virtual separation.
2. Make sure your adapter doesn't have NetBIOS turned off, not sure if this would cause that problem exactly but it should be on in a work network anyway.
3. Make sure your computer is on the same domain (should be if it works over the wire).

Hi,
We currently use Dell Latitude 2120 as our In-field Netbooks.
One has been returned to us in a real mess and I thought the easiest option would be to "Restore to Factory Settings". Apparently that's easier said than done according to Dell.
When speaking to Dell they said my only option is to do a fresh install of Windows 7 and download all the drivers.
When giving this a go I noticed that there is a recovery partition on them.
Anyone have any idea's how to access and if possible use the recovery partition to "Restore to Factory Settings".
P.S. I've tried the original Ctrl + F11.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

In some Dell models there is also the "F10" (If I'm not mistaken) key to access the recovery partition.
But most times this is a question of timming with the Crt+F11 shortcut.

Turn on the computer, at the "Dell" splash screen hold down CTRL and press F11. Let go of both keys.
I think the trick is to hold CTRL just after you turn it on and then press F11 a few times... eventually you'll get it

Our IT dept uses Radia to deploy patches/software etc.
The problem is that its not very informative, and through out the day you just get random 'please reboot' prompts. Is there a way of working out, why radia wants to reboot your pc for the fourth time?

Contact their helpdesk, ask if there's a technical person who can list the updates. If one of those processes is "in use" on the client's PC, then it cannot be replaced (you can't replace a running executable) and will be replaced on the next boot, just before the login-screen appears. Hence the need for a (4th) reboot.
Ask them if they could set up the patches so that the clients all update at the same time, preferably before office-hours. That would mean that all computers should be booted at that time, but that's when the most clients will not be using their apps, and it should limit the amount of reboots required during the day.

Hello! I read many forums and did not get a competent and accurate answer so I decided to post here.
I have bought a laptop and it has installed Russian language on windows 7 home premium. I know the only way to change the language via the language pack is to upgrade to higher versions but I have the following question: Can I download and install the same version (windows 7 home premium 64bit) with US English now with the same product key with keeping license?

If it's an OEM-version, then no - it would be bound to that region, including it's pricing. Otherwise, you could try and contact Microsoft support.

Got a new computer at work:
Windows 7 professional with an nVidia Quadro2000, native resolution, latest drivers.
On my main screen (Westinghouse l2410nm, monitor), all the fonts look crappy, there is ghosting, individual letters are not good (pixel doubling, some letters look bold, ... )
I tried switching cleartype on or off but that does not change much.
I tried changing refresh rates, but it is stuck at 59mhz (I can only chnage it to 60mhz!)
Am I missing a setting somewhere ?

Seems a lot of people have issues with that monitor which is a TV by design.
There are a lot of hack'n'slash fixes out there, modifying the registry or the EDID file, sometihng I'm not ready to do.
So I simply switched monitor with someone else.

I am slowly getting my Win 7 where I want it.
I like to continue using Briefcase but finding out that it is not an option when New folder is used ( as advertized in Win7 Help ). The only way to get it is via desktop. I would not call it user friendly operation. Is that normal on Win 7 or did I find another problem with my Inspiron?
I also cannot get the “old” XP equivalent of start up programs on start. I need some advice here.

However, I would also appreciate if in the future you do not insult my intelligence making references to "Google it". Been there , done that! FYI - my four year grandson knows how to Google. I guess I need to start posting again that Google references are not necessary.
I think you also misread my comment about Briefcase. Win 7 Help specifically describe how to activate Briefcase after creating New Folder.
There is no such option to do that on my copy of Win 7.

I have a PC with Windows 7 OS which is having problem booting up.
It runs “DOS” check disk and does not complete it and does not boot.
By accident I changed the vendor's boot to USB and it booted the OS.
I have been unsuccessful changing the setup to boot to USB. The boot precess runs differently each time I try that and never completes.
So it looks like MBR on the HD is kaput. Since I am new to Windows 7 I hope I can get to DOS fdisk and restore the MBR.
Or is there any other newfangled way to to this in Windows 7?
At one point the OS start running “automatic updates” , but started with #40 out of 72.
My guess is that the original update got interrupted and the result is no boot record on HD.
BTW , for 64 bit OS it is painfully slow, but I do not look given horse into mouth.

My laptop is an Acer Extensa 5630Z that currently has 3GB of RAM. That page says I can only uprade to 4GB, but I wonder if that was just a hypothetical maximum, perhaps based on the largest RAM modules available when I bought my laptop. My question is if I could install, say, two of these 4GB sticks for a total of 8GB. My laptop is 64-bit capable, and that RAM is the proper type, so I don't see why there would be an arbitrary limit of 4GB (assuming I install Windows 7 64-bit).
I first tried to ask Acer over a chat if this would be possible, but let's just say I don't have much confidence in the support person's knowledge (he indicated 4GB is the max). Here is the shortened conversation for your review and amusement:
Me: I was considering buying some RAM for my Acer Extensa 5630Z. I was curious if there were any limitations of the size I could install. For example, could I get 2 PC-5300 DIMMs that are each 4GB (for a total of 8GB)?
Me: Just as an example, I found some RAM on NewEgg with the description "G.SKILL 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory". I was thinking of buying 2 of those.
Him: You can upgrade up to maximum of 4 GB.
Him: Up to 2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz memory, upgradable to 4 GB using two soDIMM modules.
Me: Is that a limitation of the other hardware in the laptop, or was that just the largest amount of memory that was tested, or is that a software limitation?
Him: It will tested with maximum memory, and the system performance will affect, if you exceed the maximum memory.
Him: You can upgrade up to 4 GB RAM.
Me: OK, I just want to be sure there's no chance I could upgrade to 6GB or 8GB. I thought perhaps this type of RAM may not have been available when my laptop was made. Do you know that level of detail?
Him: I am sure, your system will compatible up to 4 GB up gradation only.
Have any idea of whether or not I should be able to do more than a "4 GB up gradation"?

Good news and bad news. According to this, the chipset supports 8GB. However, it also says "256-Mb, 512-Mb, 1-Gb, and 2-Gb memory technologies supported". So if the motherboard had 4 RAM slots, maybe it would allow for 8GB, but since there are only 2 slots, maybe it only allows for 4GB. Though, again, I run into the possibility that the largest RAM of this type may have been 2GB when this document was created.

Anyone know how to properly declutter a window 7 laptop. Ive done the Disk Cleanup (inclduing former restore points), defragged and run Piriform CCleaner.
I've found one directory online that got a few meg, but all I can free up is 12.5 G on an 80G disk.
Now I do have the RC for Visual Studio 2012 installed along side VS2008, but that would account for no more than 10G. One or other may have to go but I would prefer to retain 08 until 12 settles in. If pushed 12 gets it!
Looking over the drive using Winzip Utilities, the real perpetrators are thousands of small files that appear to be related to various automatic updates. I tried removing some of them but that caused chaos. The machine is over 4 years old, and was upgraded from Vista to 7 about 15 months ago.

you can use tools like WinDirStats to find where the bulk of you storage is being used. That is always a good starting point. I would also recommend checking to see what processes are running and what programs are installed. Then ask yourself if you still use the programs and if not, remove them. Maybe more your documents and music and such to an external drive.
I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the sourcecode....

Install programs reduced to essentials (except the second Visual Studio!), All major documents moved off. I dont do movies / music etc on it.
Performance is actually not all that bad - its just that I am running out of room. I am considering cloning it to a bigger drive.
WinDirStats has helped my gain a further 4GB. When I have the MySQL wobble corrected, I should be able to increase that by perhaps another 1, giving me 17.
The real solution is to clone to a bigger disk - or buy a new laptop!

What do you mean "kill"? This is just a shortcut to a website, if you don't want to keep it then delete it from your PC.
