The advice in the article is sound.

I was taught the exact same tactics at the beginning of my career by a recruiter.

One other piece of advice that I can offer, is when you start probing back trying to get them to name their number, you my ask "I assume you have a range that you have set for what you're willing to pay for this position?"

Like the author said, "Most likely they will say yes."

Then you ask what the range is...

Then you ask how well they believe you are suited for the position. When they say you seem like a very good fit, that gives you the leverage to ask for the top of their range.

I can't reiterate enough how well this works, "I will consider any reasonable offer" and "compensation is so much more than the salary, let me hear more about the job, benefits, perks..."
