How do I make a menu with images above it that change opacity based on hover?

I'm using Wordpress and X-theme to build a site and I want to make a menu like the one on this site (at the bottom under the big picture) http://www.swinter.com/projects.htm. I want the images and corresponding titles to be linked like they are on that site, when you hover over the title, the image lights up and vice versa.

I'm really new to all of this and don't know where to begin, so appreciate any help!
