Visual Studio C++ compiler is pretty-well aligned with C++ standard (VS2010 better than the VS2008 one), at least in order to make most of the existing (standard) C++ code compile. Probably you are trying to compile code written (via libraries usage) for a particular (not Windows) Platform.
