Is there any way to add a custom option to the Windows 7 (and possibly Vista) Shutdown Context menus? So that when I click the arrow for additional shutdown options in the Start Menu, I have "Hello World!" as an option. Of course I would like to be able to detect from a program when it is clicked. I would prefer answers in VB.Net or C#, but I realize that, if it is possible, it may require C++. I was thinking it would be pretty cool to do something like Boot Snooze or iReboot, but fully integrated. I would understand if it is not possible, but it would be pretty stinking cool.

Well a simple Google search finds lots of suggestions[^].

Why don't you take a look deeper into the results? They are about how to remove the default buttons or restore them. I always Google first, I forgot that I need to mention that.

Why don't I take a look deeper into the results? Because I'm not interested in the answer, you are. What you are asking is how to hack into the system, so it's a Google search for the answer. Very few people are actively interested in doing this sort of thing as it has no commercial value.

That is why I am here: it is not something that is easy to find. I am sorry I snapped earlier. I am always told to go to Google when I already have. I get a little annoyed at that sometimes, but that is not your fault.

You are always told to go to Google, because you ask questions like "how can I ..." which suggests that you have not done any research in advance of asking the question. Take another look at the posting guidelines which I have added below.
A few simple rules when posting your question.

  1. Have you searched or Googled for a solution?
  2. Be specific! Don't ask "I need to write a booking application". Specify exactly what it is you need help with.
  3. Keep the subject brief but descriptive. eg "How do I change the dialog colour?"
  4. Keep the question as concise as possible. If you have to include code, include the smallest snippet of code you can - do not dump your entire codebase.
  5. Tag your question appropriately.
  6. Your question may be edited or retagged by others. Anything inappropriate will be removed.
  7. If you have a school or university assignment, assume that your teacher or lecturer is also reading these forums.
  8. Be courteous and DON'T SHOUT. Everyone here helps because they enjoy helping others, not because it's their job.
  9. Do not remove or empty a message if others have replied. Keep the thread intact and available for others to search and read.
  10. Do not be abusive, offensive, inappropriate, harass anyone on the boards or post ads or spam. Doing so will get you kicked off and banned. Play nice.
