.NET and offis excel question

Hi,all friends here.
As I begin to so some operation on MS excel, I was totally confuesd. If we just want to operate offis in .NET, what should we do? what if we do it on linux without Excel? As I searched on finding linq,JET,Object Model, i can't know what to do with it. when and how to use it? Can someone help me to get a general idea so that I can google for more infos. As I know this is a stupid question, but just confusing me a long time. thanks for reply to the stupid question.

It's not the the question is "stupid", it's that I (at least) have absolutely no idea what it is that you are asking.

As was totally confuesd when search for office .net. I have no idea what to begin with, nor how to post a thread here.
