When I tried creating a new silverlight project, I got an error message.

It is "Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Build, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest."

Kindly help me to solve this issue in visual studio 2010.

Can you share more details on when it comes? Designer? Opening project? Sharing your exact situation would help.

In visual studio 2010 pro edition
File-->New Project
New project dialog box --> Silverlight Application --> Ok
New Silverlight Application dialog box --> Ok
Error msg comes with the message as above.

Tough one. You know you've got a unique problem when you search for it in google and the only results you get are you asking about your problem. It doesn't appear to be common. My next move would be reinstalling components. Silverlight, VS and then possibly Windows if it came to it.

Your issue is not common. It would be difficult to say whats going wrong. You need to troubleshoot and see if something helps.

Since it is looking for dll of version 4.0, some file is missing and needs installation. Try iInstalling: Microsoft Silverlight 4 Tools for Visual Studio 2010[^]

BTW, do look into systems event viewer too if you have anything more to the error.
