custom entity association problem

Hi,

I have a custom DTO say 'CustomMain' which has two list columns with association to two other custom DTOs say 'ListDTO1' and 'ListDTO2'. When i fill up the CustomMain DTO manually on the client side with the same key mapped to the associated List DTOs and pass it to the service method as a parameter the associated List DTOs are not getting retrieved and they are null. What could be the problem? It is possible to associate entities on the client and pass it to service?

Please help.
