This topic is too wide to discuss seriously in this forum.

Just the list of all topics could make a whole article. Different approaches to automation may have very little in common. There is a enormous number of different standards for hardware interfaces, field buses, etc., big set of different approaches just to hardware. Different classes of requirements in different fields of industry.
