VPN transfer is faster

I come across an interesting issue today.
I build a VPN tunnel between my company and its subsidiary. And I find out it is slightly faster when copying data with VPN than with just the internet. I think the routing is the same.
Anyone has any idea?

Your VPN connection might be using compression.
