I would not say it is bad, but I think that is going to be easy to bypass / to crack.

The exact same way as most other protection schemes are cracked. Why do you think that cracked version of Adobe products are available the day they are released? You are better off making your software good enough to get people to buy it rather than spend inordinate amounts of time and money implementing some protection scheme.

In my opinion you may effectively use such serial number to protect your application. It is worth noting that cracking your application would imply a not so obvious reverse engineering step.
