I have a virtual server running Windows 2008 R2 with a hosting company. When originally set up 30 GB was allocated for "C:" drive. I have received a notice I am out of disk space and 29.5GB is being taken up by the c:\Windows\winsxs\ folder.

Has anyone else found a way to clean this folder out and reduce its' size?

How can we know what is redundant in this folder if even you don't know that? All my spies working in this company are on vacation right now. And, instead of digging to customer's virtual servers, they tend to answer: "get a better hosting plan".

Sergey,

Tech support got back to me and it turns out that Microsoft has had Sooooo many complaints that they actually came out with a fix that lets one do disk cleanup, especially Update backup copies.

the link is http://support.microsoft.com/kb2852386

This seems to have done it for me freeing up 5+GB of space on a 30GB drive.

Microsoft.com reports this as a broken link.

Sergey,

(And anyone else that comes across this)

the link is Disk Cleanup Wizard addon lets users delete outdated Windows updates on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

This seems to have done it for me freeing up 5+GB of space on a 30GB drive.
