why android virtual device doesnt show the key pad ?

hello guys . iam working on an android application and i have a little problem .
you know when you use real android devices and want to enter the text , a key pad appears at the end of your device. but my virtual device doesn't show anything. iam using (Nexus 7) . i tested many AVDs but non of them did'nt show key pad !! i have to use laptop key pad to enter the text !
could you explain the reason for me ?!
